Germany's beer sales fell 2.2% in the first half of 2026.

Beer sales in Germany fell in the first half of 2026, even after a strong June failed to prevent another decline in one of Europe’s largest beer markets.

From January through June, breweries and tax warehouses in Germany sold 38.45 million hectoliters of beer, according to figures released earlier this month by the German Brewers’ Association based on data from the federal statistics office, Destatis. That was 2.2% less than in the same period a year earlier.

In absolute terms, the market lost 855,000 hectoliters compared with the first half of 2025. That equals 85.5 million liters of beer. Based on the reported decline, sales in the first six months of 2025 were about 39.31 million hectoliters.

The figures show that the improvement recorded in June was not enough to offset weaker results across the broader six-month period. The industry group said the first-half contraction came despite significant growth in June, underscoring the uneven pattern of demand in the German market this year.

Germany remains one of the biggest beer-producing and beer-consuming countries in Europe, so changes in its domestic sales are closely watched by brewers, distributors and agricultural suppliers. The first-half decline points to continued pressure on volumes after a period in which the market has struggled to return to stronger growth.

The data measure beer sold by breweries and tax warehouses in Germany during the first six months of 2026. The publicly cited figures focus on sales volume and do not include retail prices, revenue or a breakdown by beer style.

The German Brewers’ Association cited the numbers on Aug. 4, drawing on official statistics from Destatis. The half-year total of 38.45 million hectoliters means the market sold less beer than a year earlier even with a late push in June.

For brewers, the decline is notable because a 2.2% drop over a market of this size translates into a large loss in physical volume. A reduction of 855,000 hectoliters means millions fewer cases and kegs moved through the domestic system in just six months.

The first-half figures add to concerns in the brewing sector about the difficulty of sustaining sales momentum in Germany. While the June increase provided some support, it did not reverse the losses accumulated earlier in the year. The latest numbers therefore leave the market below last year’s level at the midpoint of 2026.

The data released by the brewers’ association and Destatis cover the period from January to June and provide one of the clearest early indicators of how the German beer market is performing in 2026.
