Italian wine dynasty expands U.S. presence as Coppola family retains Lumineux brand and tasting room operations

Italy’s Marzotto family, known for building Santa Margherita into a leading Pinot Grigio brand, has acquired the 41-acre Domaine Lumineux vineyard in Oregon’s Dundee Hills from filmmaker and vintner Francis Ford Coppola. The transaction was finalized during the week of March 16. Both parties declined to disclose the financial details of the sale.

The Marzotto family will add the vineyard to its U.S. portfolio under Roco Winery. Herita USA, the American branch of Herita Marzotto Wine Estates, purchased Roco in 2021, marking the family’s first winemaking venture outside Italy. Vittorio Marzotto, a fourth-generation family member and vice president of strategic initiatives for Herita USA, said the family sees great potential in the Willamette Valley and is committed to contributing to its future as a wine region.

The Coppola family will retain ownership of the Domaine Lumineux brand and its tasting room in Newberg, Oregon. Wines under the Lumineux label will continue to be produced at a nearby custom-crush facility. Erin Herrmann, director of operations for Domaine Lumineux, stated that the company plans to continue sourcing grapes from the vineyard. She emphasized that guests can expect no changes to the winemaking team or hospitality experience at the Newberg tasting room. Herrmann described the decision as one that allows Domaine Lumineux more flexibility and creative freedom.

Roco’s founding winemaker, Rollin Soles, who remained with Roco after its acquisition by the Marzottos, expressed enthusiasm about working with the vineyard again. Soles previously sourced grapes from this site—then called Vista Hills—for his RMS sparkling wine bottlings due to its location in Dundee Hills and its elevation between 670 and 870 feet. The Coppola family bought Vista Hills in 2018 and renamed it Lumineux.

Soles highlighted the vineyard’s east and south-facing slopes and deep Jory soils as key factors for quality grape production. He also noted its proximity to other prominent wineries such as Domaine Serene and Domaine Drouhin Oregon. While Pinot Noir remains the primary grape grown at Lumineux, Vittorio Marzotto said there are plans to plant more Chardonnay vines. The family intends to focus on producing RMS sparkling wines from this site, reflecting their belief in a strong future for sparkling wine in Willamette Valley.

This acquisition is Herita’s fourth in Oregon. In addition to Roco and Lumineux, Herita purchased land and vineyards in the Chehalem Mountain appellation in 2023. The 36-acre property, named Nocciola after its history as a hazelnut orchard, will supply grapes for Roco’s Gravel Road wines—a significant part of Roco’s production.

In 2025, Herita also acquired Marsh Estate in Yamhill-Carlton, a 22-acre vineyard that Roco has used for single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay since 2010. The estate includes an Italianate mansion currently being renovated for hospitality purposes. Named Casa Roco, it is scheduled to open to visitors in mid-July.

With these expansions, Roco Winery plans to close its current tasting room near Newberg and expand its production facility to handle up to 30,000 cases annually—double its output from 2021.

Rollin Soles described the Marzotto family as patient investors with a long-term vision for their properties. He said they are committed to improving their holdings over time and maintaining high standards across generations.
