Wine imports in the United States ended 2024 with a slight increase in both value and volume, according to U.S. customs data. The growth was 1.6% in value, reaching $6.789 billion, and 0.1% in volume, with a total of 1.226 billion liters imported. The average price of imported wine stood at $5.54 per liter, reflecting a 1.5% increase from the previous year.
December saw a notable surge in wine imports, with a 23% rise in value and a 29.5% increase in volume. This trend may have been driven by U.S. importers anticipating potential new tariffs proposed by the Trump administration.
Among the different wine categories, bottled wine saw a 2.6% increase in value and a 5.4% rise in volume, reaching $4.787 billion and 684.1 million liters. Sparkling wine imports also grew, up 1.3% in value and 11% in volume. In contrast, bulk wine experienced a 12% drop in value and a 13% decrease in volume, while bag-in-box wine fell 6.7% in value but increased 2% in volume.
The U.S. imported wine from 73 countries in 2024, though purchases were mainly concentrated in France and Italy. France led in value, with $2.506 billion in imports, a 0.3% increase from 2023, followed by Italy with $2.253 billion, marking a 6.5% rise. Together, these two countries accounted for 70% of total U.S. spending on imported wine.
In volume, Italy was the largest supplier, exporting 353.9 million liters to the U.S., up 6.1%. Canada ranked second, despite a 9.4% decline to 203.8 million liters. France was third, with 171.9 million liters exported, a 7.2% increase from the previous year.
Spain ranked as the fourth-largest supplier in value, with $391.4 million in exports, a 7.4% increase. In volume, it placed seventh with 67.3 million liters, also up 7.2%. The average price of Spanish wine in the U.S. market was $5.81 per liter, above the overall average of $5.54. In absolute terms, the U.S. imported 4.5 million more liters of Spanish wine than in 2023, with an additional $27.1 million in spending.
Beyond France, Italy, and Spain, Argentina increased its wine exports to the U.S. by 3% in both value and volume. Chile also saw an 11% rise in volume, while Moldova recorded a sharp increase, growing from 2.1 million liters in 2023 to 49.6 million in 2024, an 799.5% jump. However, other suppliers experienced declines in their wine exports to the U.S.
