At the opening of the Assoenologi 2026 congress in Conegliano, Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, called for a public conversation about wine that emphasizes moderation, knowledge and responsibility rather than alarm. In a message read at the start of the meeting on Thursday evening, Piantedosi said wine remains “a symbol of sociality and sharing” in Italian convivial tradition and argued that younger generations should be taught a culture of conscious and responsible consumption.
The congress is being held in Conegliano, in the heart of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Docg hills, a Unesco World Heritage site, and runs through May 30. Piantedosi’s remarks came at a moment when, as he put it, not only abuse but wine consumption “tout court” is under pressure in public debate. He said promoting moderation and product knowledge together is especially important within a broader strategy of production responsibility.
“The prevention of risky behavior and the protection of health are goals that require the commitment of all institutions,” Piantedosi said. He added that such efforts would be more effective with stronger involvement from producers, associations and education groups.
The minister also pointed to the challenges facing the wine sector in recent years, including climate change, shifting international markets and a more demanding economic environment. He said the government is paying close attention to the industry because supporting Italian excellence strengthens national competitiveness, protects jobs and promotes production models based on ethics and quality.
Piantedosi said wine professionals have an important role to play in communicating quality and responsibility while also reinforcing safety and value. He stressed that in an increasingly competitive global market, continued investment in innovation, scientific research and the protection of appellations and quality production is essential.
He said the Interior Ministry would continue to support legality in the economy and security across production chains, including through law enforcement. He closed by thanking enologists for their work and describing the congress as a place where energy, passion and new ideas can help shape the future of wine worldwide.
