The International Drink Wine Day, celebrated on February 18, is drawing attention to the Golan Heights, an emerging wine region in northern Israel. The area is known for its volcanic soils, high-altitude vineyards, and a growing reputation for quality winemaking. Wineries across the Golan Heights are preparing to welcome visitors with guided tours, professional tastings, and special events throughout the year.
The Golan Heights region offers a unique combination of natural landscapes and wine culture. Many of the vineyards are located at elevations that reach up to 3,900 feet above sea level. The volcanic soil and cool mountain climate contribute to wines with distinct freshness and complexity. Visitors can explore both small family-run wineries and larger established producers along the Golan wine route.
In the northern part of the Golan, Har Odem Winery in Moshav Odem was founded in 2003 by the Elfasi family. The winery produces about 200,000 bottles annually and focuses on celebrating life and community through wine. All their wines have been certified vegan since 2021. Nearby accommodations include Merom Golan Hotel and Elrom Boutique Hotel.
Pelter Winery, located in Kibbutz Ein Zivan, was established in 2001 by brothers Tal and Nir Pelter. They introduced Australian winemaking techniques to Israel, aiming for high quality at accessible prices. The winery also operates Matar Winery, a kosher label, and Pelter Distillery, one of Israel’s first boutique distilleries.
Bahat Winery, also in Kibbutz Ein Zivan, is a kosher boutique winery offering tours, tastings, and a gourmet shop featuring local wines, cheeses, liqueurs, and regional products. During holidays and harvest season, Bahat organizes family activities and vineyard visits. Ein Zivan Holiday Village provides nearby lodging.
Tel Shifon Winery in Kibbutz Ortal was founded in 2009 near the Tel Shifon volcano. It produces about 70,000 bottles per year from varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot. The volcanic soil and cool climate help create wines with strong character. Ortal Glamping offers accommodation close to the winery.
In central Golan Heights, Assaf Winery and Kedem Wine Village in Kidmat Tzvi combine a family-run winery with a visitor center, guest cabins, and a café. Guests can enjoy unlimited wine tastings paired with gourmet baskets.
Ein Nashot Winery and Bel Ofri Farm are located in a former military bunker. They offer a mix of wine experiences, agricultural workshops, artisanal cheeses, and an eco-friendly restaurant. Pereh Hotel is nearby for those seeking overnight stays.
Golan Heights Winery in Katzrin is Israel’s largest winery. Founded in 1983, it produces around 5 million bottles annually. The facility offers guided tours, professional tastings, and a specialized shop.
Bazelet HaGolan Winery in Kidmat Tzvi is recognized for its use of basaltic soil and natural production methods. Guided tastings are available at its visitor center. Cnaan Village Boutique Hotel & Spa provides local accommodation options.
In southern Golan Heights, Terra Nova Winery in Moshav Kanaf offers tastings of wine and olive oil as well as seasonal vegan gourmet products. Ramot Resort Hotel is located nearby.
Château Golan in Moshav Eliad was founded in 1999 and produces about 100,000 bottles per year. The winery combines European tradition with modern technology to create wines that reflect the region’s identity. Etnachta Village Resort offers accommodation close to the winery.
Mika Winery in Bnei Yehuda was established by an academically trained female winemaker whose wines are known for their balance and minimalist style. The winery also features local gourmet products. Mitzpe HaShalom Resort Village is nearby for guests.
The grape harvest season provides visitors with opportunities to connect directly with Israeli wine culture through exclusive vineyard activities and meetings with producers. For those planning tasting routes across multiple wineries, staying overnight in the region is recommended to avoid driving between tastings. The proximity of wineries to hotels makes it easy to plan multi-day food and wine getaways.
The Golan Heights continues to develop as a destination for wine tourism in Israel. With its combination of volcanic terroir, diverse wineries, and local hospitality, the region is attracting both domestic visitors and international travelers interested in discovering new wine experiences.
