France's appellations body, INAO, has approved the production of low-alcohol wines under the IGP titles of Périgord, Comté Tolosan, and Val de Loire.

Wines with as little as 6% alcohol by volume can now use these geographical indicators.

This is achieved by blending wine with reduced alcohol content with standard wine, often from the same batch.

Previously, the minimum alcohol level for IGP Val de Loire wines ranged from 8.5% to 9%, depending on the production zone.

The change aims to meet growing consumer demand for variety while maintaining IGP quality standards.

The ruling applies retroactively to wines from the 2024 vintage, according to trade publication Rayon Boissons.
