International Wine and Spirit Competition Celebrates High-Quality Wines in Italy

This week, the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) held its third Global Judging event of the 2025 Awards in Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Italy. The event was organized in collaboration with the Consorzio Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG. Six judges, led by Sarah Abbott MW, gathered to evaluate the region's wines over two days. The judges were impressed by the overall high quality of the wines. Most wines received medals, with nearly half earning Gold or Silver. They observed a wider range of styles and aromas than anticipated, noting creativity and openness in winemaking.

The judges found Extra Dry styles to be more consistent than Brut. While both categories had good quality, Brut wines showed more variation. This might be because Extra Dry is a more established category, while Brut is still evolving. The best Brut wines were praised for their purity and charm, highlighting the Glera grape's primary fruit. However, some wines had lees work or extended aging that overshadowed the grape's natural appeal. Judges suggested that producers interested in experimental styles consider blending with ancient, permitted varietals.

Several Sui Lieviti (on the lees) wines were highlighted for their complexity and balance. The judges also commended the Rive cru wines, which showcased distinct terroir characteristics. They noted that non-vintage and vintage wines were of similar quality. The judging panel included Melania Battiston, Cat Lomax, Jason Millar, Vincenzo Arnese, Megan Clarke, and Helena Nicklin.
