Amidst this evocative backdrop is where Petra, the Suvereto winery's signature wine, finds its roots. A sprawling natural haven of 350 hectares in Val di Cornia, Petra is a divergence from the quintessential Tuscan scenery, oscillating between dense woods and verdant plains.
Born from the vision and passion of the Moretti family in 1997, Petra encapsulates the essence of its surroundings. "For over a quarter-century, our approach to winemaking has been predicated upon the idea of capturing the territorial identity within each bottle," states Francesca Moretti, the winemaker and vice president of the Terra Moretti Holding. It is this dedication that has yielded Petra, a wine that doesn't merely bear the company's name but encapsulates its ethos and tradition, vintage after vintage.
A combination of elements - from the limestone's presence, an abundance of minerals like iron, sodium, magnesium, to the profound clay layers known as the blue clay of the Apennines - plays a pivotal role in shaping the Bordeaux varieties that constitute Petra. Every grape used, whether Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Cabernet Franc, is selected with utmost precision from the choicest vineyards adjacent to the winery, ensuring that each grape is harvested at its peak maturity.
2020 brought with it a series of meteorological challenges and surprises. A mild, rainy winter transitioned into an unexpectedly cool March end. However, the gentle spring rains fostered optimal vegetative growth and acidity development in the grapes. The summer's considerable temperature fluctuations accentuated the grapes' fruity and aromatic profiles. The timely rains in September, followed by a notable dip in temperatures, paved the way for optimal maturity, especially for Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Comprising 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, Petra 2020 tantalizes the senses with its enchanting sweetness harmoniously juxtaposed against a robust structure. The wine's prolonged maturation in French oak barriques, coupled with the distinctive terroir, has culminated in a vintage that's redolent with rich fruity notes, balsamic undertones, and toasted aromas. With its harmonious blend of dark fruit and spices, the wine promises to age gracefully, becoming more nuanced and exquisite with each year.
Venturing into Petra is akin to stepping into a world steeped in wine history, tracing its lineage back to the ancient Etruscans and Greeks.
