The Rioja Wine Academy, the official educational platform of Spain’s leading wine region, has announced new initiatives to strengthen international wine education. Since its launch in 2020, the academy has provided free online courses for wine enthusiasts and professionals worldwide. Over 40,000 participants have enrolled in its flexible programs, which range from beginner to advanced levels.
This year, the Rioja Wine Academy is expanding its digital offerings with a new blog. The blog aims to deliver current trends, background information, and inspiration to the global wine community. According to Peter Arijs, Education & Global Projects Manager at the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja, the blog is designed as an open space for concise and accessible content. He said that while the academy’s courses offer structured certification pathways, the blog will provide up-to-date insights for anyone interested in wine knowledge.
The academy’s curriculum is divided into three levels. Level 1, called Rioja Enthusiast, is a four-hour introduction for beginners. Level 2, Rioja Wine Diploma, is a 15-20 hour course aimed at professionals in trade and wine tourism. Level 3, Certified Rioja Wine Educator, includes a 30-hour online course, an exam, and a study trip to Rioja. In addition to these courses, the academy offers “Rioja Tasting Essentials,” an interactive online tasting course with an optional tasting kit. This six-hour program covers tasting basics such as aromas, flavor profiles, grape varieties, and the impact of oak aging. Graduates receive official certificates and access to an international alumni network.
Another highlight this year is the return of Rioja Camp, an intensive educational trip for experienced wine professionals. Scheduled for November 2-6, 2026 in Rioja, the camp targets sommeliers, buyers, educators, journalists, and industry experts with at least three years of professional experience and solid wine education. The program includes masterclasses, tastings, and visits to renowned wineries. Participants will explore Rioja’s diversity firsthand and gain deeper understanding of current trends and terroirs. The number of places is limited to ensure an exclusive learning environment. Applications are open until July 14 through the official website; selected participants will be notified by the end of August.
Rioja remains Spain’s most important wine region and a growing destination for wine tourism. The DOCa Rioja celebrates its 100th anniversary this year as a protected designation of origin. With more than 600 wineries and 14,000 growers across diverse landscapes and climates, Rioja produces a wide range of wines that are recognized globally for their quality. The region exports to over 100 international markets and continues to balance tradition with innovation.
The Consejo Regulador de la DOCa Rioja oversees quality control and communication on behalf of all producers in the region. Its commitment to traceability and transparency has helped establish Rioja as a reference point in the global wine sector. The new educational initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to adapt to changing market demands while preserving the authenticity that defines Rioja wines.
