five gins named finalists for world’s best at 2025 san francisco spirits competition

The 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition has announced its five finalists for the title of World’s Best Gin, drawing attention from both industry professionals and gin enthusiasts worldwide. The SFWSC, held annually in San Francisco, is recognized as one of the most respected spirits competitions globally. Its results often influence consumer choices and set trends in the beverage industry.

Among the finalists is Tanqueray No. TEN, produced by Diageo at the Cameronbridge distillery in Scotland. Launched in 2000, this gin is named after the small No. 10 copper still used in its production. It stands out for its use of fresh whole citrus fruits—limes, oranges, and grapefruit—alongside classic botanicals like juniper, coriander, and chamomile. Tanqueray No. TEN is known for its bright citrus aroma, smooth texture, and a long, creamy finish with lingering notes of citrus and spice. With annual sales reaching about 5 million cases, it remains one of the world’s top-selling premium gins.

Gin Mare Capri represents a Mediterranean approach to gin-making. Produced in Spain and inspired by the Italian island of Capri, this gin builds on the original Gin Mare’s maritime character by adding Italian bergamot and lemons to its blend of Arbequina olives, rosemary, thyme, basil, and coriander. The result is a gin with a crisp nose featuring lemon zest and olive brine, a palate marked by herbal and citrus notes, and a light yet persistent finish that highlights its savory maritime qualities.

Seattle’s 3 Howls Distillery brings a bold contender with its Navy Strength Gin. At 57% ABV, this gin follows the tradition of “navy strength” spirits—strong enough to ignite gunpowder if spilled. The recipe includes juniper, coriander, angelica root, citrus peel, and spices. Its aroma is intense with juniper and black pepper; on the palate it delivers robust flavors of orange zest, cardamom, and spice. The high alcohol content amplifies these flavors and provides a long, warming finish that suits classic cocktails like the Negroni or a Navy G&T.

Fritztown Premium Gin comes from Salvation Spirits Distillery in Fredericksburg, Texas—locally known as “Fritztown.” This craft gin incorporates regional Texas botanicals to create floral and peppery aromas with notes of wildflowers, juniper berries, lemon balm, and sage. The palate is smooth and slightly sweet with flavors of lavender, citrus zest, coriander, and juniper. Its finish is lengthy and floral with hints of lemon verbena and herbs.

Gale Force Gin is produced by Triple Eight Distillery on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. Named after the strong Atlantic winds that shape Nantucket’s climate, this gin features a classic botanical profile: juniper, coriander seed, citrus peel, anise, cardamom, and subtle saline minerality. Distilled in small batches, Gale Force Gin offers aromas of juniper and lemon zest with a hint of sea breeze. The palate is dry and robust with traditional gin flavors enhanced by spice and minerality; the finish is long and crisp with lingering notes of black pepper.

These five gins reflect the diversity found in today’s premium gin market—from Mediterranean-inspired blends to bold American craft spirits. Each finalist brings unique regional influences and distinct flavor profiles to the competition floor at SFWSC 2025. The winner will be announced later this year as judges complete their tastings in San Francisco.
