Aldi has announced a significant change in its wine packaging as part of a sustainability initiative. The supermarket will remove protective sleeves from the corks of 46 of its own-label wines, including popular choices like Côtes du Rhone, Rioja Reserva, and Atlantique Rosé. This move aims to reduce the use of aluminum and plastic, marking a step towards minimizing unnecessary packaging in the retail sector.
The initiative follows a successful trial that began in March 2024. By the end of 2025, all of Aldi's own-label corked wines will have their protective sleeves removed. Luke Emery, Aldi UK's National Sustainability Director, emphasized the importance of sustainability for customers and expressed pride in being the first supermarket to implement this change across its entire range of own-brand corked wines.
Earlier this year, Aldi partnered with The Hidden Sea for its own-label Chardonnay. This collaboration ensures that for every bottle of Kooliburra Hidden Sea Chardonnay purchased, the equivalent of 10 plastic bottles worth of ocean plastic will be removed.
In related news, M&S has also made a sustainable packaging change. The supermarket will package avocados in cardboard to eliminate seven million units of plastic. The new packaging will feature appealing designs while maintaining fruit quality.
Additionally, Aldi is launching a CBD-infused pillow, priced at £13, which claims to improve sleep. This product will be available in stores starting March 9, while supplies last.
