Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres has introduced "La Halconera," a wine positioned as the flagship of its Signature Wines collection, embodying the winery's dedication to innovation in viticulture and the preservation of native grape varieties. This wine is crafted from Maturana Tinta, a nearly extinct minority grape variety, and is the result of an ambitious research project combining modern selection and winemaking techniques with deep respect for the winemaking heritage of La Rioja.
The vineyard for "La Halconera" is located at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, on a steep slope planted more than 60 years ago. Over three years, meticulous grafting of buds onto old vines transformed the vineyard while preserving its original essence. This precise process revitalized the site, enhancing its qualitative potential. With optimal exposure, orientation, and soil conditions, the vineyard provides an ideal environment for cultivating Maturana Tinta, a low-yield grape known for producing concentrated and meticulously ripened fruit.
The production of "La Halconera" is limited, enhancing its exclusivity. The wine captures the character of its origin, showcasing a distinctive expression of Maturana Tinta. On the palate, it offers breadth, juicy tannins, and a persistent, vibrant finish. Its bouquet features a complex array of ripe black fruit, toasted notes, and liqueur-like hints. The 2021 vintage is positioned as a wine with significant potential for future development.
The transformation of "La Halconera" is part of a broader initiative by Marqués de Cáceres. Nearby parcels such as Ribacervera, Altares, Cerrillos, and Cruces have also been converted for Maturana Tinta cultivation. These vineyards complement the work at "La Halconera" and underscore the winery's commitment to this unique variety, which serves as both a historical legacy and a source of innovation in winemaking.
The launch of "La Halconera" coincides with the redesign of the label for Generación MC Tempranillo, another iconic wine from the winery. The 2022 vintage of Generación MC is notable for its aromatic intensity, structure, and complexity on the palate. With a deep burgundy color, its nose balances elegance and power, while its rounded tannins and long finish capture the essence of Tempranillo.
Both wines have received accolades in prestigious guides and competitions. "La Halconera" earned a Gran Oro award at the Real Casino de Madrid Wine Competition and achieved 97 points in the Proensa Guide. Generación MC, meanwhile, scored 96 points in both the Proensa and Gourmets guides, cementing its status as a benchmark among signature wines.
Through "La Halconera," Marqués de Cáceres reinforces its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the valorization of viticultural heritage. This project demonstrates how tradition and technology can merge to create wines distinguished by their quality and their ability to convey stories in every glass.
