In November 2024, the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) officially accepted China's application for membership, marking a significant milestone in the institution's history. The application, submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China on May 14, 2024, initiated a six-month regulatory consultation process that successfully concluded this month. The next step requires Chinese authorities to ratify the acceptance within one year, during which China will be able to fully participate in the organization's activities.

The OIV, established on November 29, 1924, welcomes its first new member as it begins its second century. This addition highlights the organization's growing international relevance as a technical and scientific forum addressing issues related to the wine and vine sector.

China, which boasts the third-largest vineyard area globally, emerges as a pivotal player in the global wine industry. The country is also the world's largest producer of table grapes and ranks eighth in wine consumption. China's membership enhances the OIV's representation, bringing its total to 51 member countries and extending its coverage to 85% of the world's vineyard area.

This development not only strengthens the OIV's position as the leading authority in the wine sector but also reflects China's increasing interest in expanding its role and influence in the global wine industry. China's participation could foster new opportunities for technical cooperation, research, and policy development to address the sector's current and future challenges.

By joining the OIV, China integrates into a global network of countries committed to sharing knowledge and setting common standards for wine production and trade. This move contributes to a more interconnected and sustainable wine market and marks a new chapter in China's relationship with international institutions dedicated to the vine and wine industry.
