Police will also halt alcohol sales from Friday evening, citing severe health risks under strong sun

Paris will ban drinking alcohol in public starting at midday Friday as authorities try to limit health risks from the heatwave affecting France and much of Europe.

Paris police chief Patrice Faure said on BFM TV on Thursday that he would issue an order banning public alcohol consumption from noon on Friday. He said alcohol under strong sun can have a devastating effect on health.

Faure also said the sale of alcoholic products in Paris would be banned from Friday evening onward.

The measures come as high temperatures continue across the French capital and other parts of Europe. In Paris, the restrictions add a public health dimension to the heat emergency and could also disrupt late-week sales for bars, retailers and other beverage businesses that depend on outdoor consumption and evening trade.

Reuters reported the announcement on Thursday.
