France strengthened its lead by value, and bag-in-box was the only segment to post growth in sales and volume

Switzerland imported less wine in both value and volume in the first quarter of 2026, according to Swiss customs data analyzed by Spain’s Interprofessional Wine Organization, known as OIVE.

From January through March, total wine imports fell 6% in value to €271.7 million and 4% in volume to 36.5 million liters. The average price slipped 2.1% to €7.44 a liter.

Packaged wines, a category that includes sparkling wine, still wine in bottle and bag-in-box, accounted for most of the market and posted the sharper decline. Imports in that segment dropped 6.3% in value to €256.2 million and 5.6% in volume to 24.9 million liters. The average price for packaged wine edged down 0.7% to €10.3 a liter.

Bulk wine imports were more stable. Switzerland imported €15.5 million worth of bulk wine in the quarter, down 1.7%, while volume fell 0.3% to 11.6 million liters. The average bulk wine price declined 1.4% to €1.33 a liter.

Within packaged wines, sparkling wine showed mixed results. Import value fell 1.3% to €49.93 million, while volume dropped 11% to 4.28 million liters. Even so, the average price rose 10.9% to €11.66 a liter, suggesting demand shifted toward more expensive sparkling wines.

Bag-in-box was the only category to grow in both value and volume during the quarter, rising 1.9% and 2.9%, respectively, according to the market analysis.

France remained Switzerland’s top wine supplier by value, with sales of €121.3 million from January through March, up 3.1% from a year earlier. Italy ranked second by value at €89.9 million, down 7.5%.

By volume, Italy held first place with 15.4 million liters, an 8.3% decline, followed by France with 9.6 million liters, up 6.3%.

Spain ranked third in both value and volume among Switzerland’s wine suppliers. Its total shipments reached 5 million liters, down 8.7%. In packaged wines, Spain exported €26.8 million worth of product to Switzerland, down 16.5%, and shipped 3.4 million liters, down 5.7%.

In bulk wine, Spain also placed third, with exports of €1.13 million and 1.6 million liters during the quarter.

The leading suppliers to Switzerland by value in the period were France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, the United States, Austria, the United Kingdom and South Africa.

The figures point to a weaker start to the year for Swiss wine imports overall, with lower purchases across most categories and suppliers, while France gained ground in value and bag-in-box stood out as the only segment to expand in both sales and volume.
