Researchers are once again pointing to red wine as a drink that may offer some health benefits when consumed in moderation, even as doctors continue to warn that alcohol is not a medical treatment and can carry serious risks.
A report cited by The Guardian said moderate wine consumption may help improve cardiovascular function, lower levels of low-density lipoprotein, the so-called bad cholesterol, and support blood circulation. Scientists have linked those effects to compounds found in wine that may help reduce inflammation, widen blood vessels and improve blood flow.
Red wine has drawn particular attention because it contains resveratrol, a natural compound found in grape skins that has long been associated with heart health. Researchers say that is one reason red wine often stands out in discussions about diet and cardiovascular disease.
The findings come at a time when many consumers are looking for drinks that fit into a health-conscious lifestyle. But specialists say the message should not be mistaken for an endorsement of drinking as a wellness strategy. Any possible benefit depends on moderation, and the risks of alcohol remain clear.
Some researchers cited in the report suggested that a so-called therapeutic level should not exceed about 20 glasses a month. Even so, doctors caution that alcohol can worsen certain medical conditions and may be especially dangerous for people with a history of dependency or those at higher risk of developing one.
Health experts also note that the evidence does not mean people who do not drink should start. For those who already consume alcohol, the advice remains to keep intake limited and to consider overall diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors as the main drivers of heart health.
The renewed interest in red wine reflects a broader debate in medicine over whether some alcoholic drinks can fit into a balanced diet without causing harm. For now, researchers say the science still points to possible benefits from modest consumption, but not enough to make wine a recommendation on its own.
