The bottling of “Madeirense” wine with Denomination of Origin (DO) status saw a sharp decline in 2025, dropping by 30.7% compared to the previous year. According to data from the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM), only 135,400 liters were bottled during the year. In contrast, wines with Geographical Indication (IG) “Terras Madeirenses” experienced a notable increase. Bottling volumes for these wines rose by 20.8%, reaching 18,200 liters, as reported by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM).
Despite the decrease in bottling for DO “Madeirense” wines, sales figures told a different story. In 2025, approximately 148,000 liters of DO “Madeirense” wine were sold, excluding sparkling wine. This generated €1.56 million in revenue. These numbers represent a 12.3% increase in volume and a 23.7% rise in value compared to 2024.
Sales of IG “Terras Madeirenses” wines also grew significantly. The total volume sold reached 16,600 liters, with a value of €151,900. This marks an increase of 36.2% in volume and an impressive 82.5% jump in value over the previous year.
The regional market played a dominant role in these results. It absorbed 75.8% of the total volume and accounted for 64.5% of the value from first sales of these wines.
When looking at wine types within the DO “Madeirense” category, white wines led sales, making up 46.6% of the volume and 58.1% of the value. Rosé wines followed with 34% of the volume and 20.5% of the value, while red wines accounted for 19.4% of the volume and 21.4% of the value.
For IG “Terras Madeirenses” wines, reds were most popular, representing 57% of the volume and 66.9% of the value sold. White wines made up 37.7% of the volume and contributed to 29% of the total value.
These figures highlight shifting trends in both production and consumer preferences for Madeira’s local wines during 2025, with regional demand remaining strong despite changes in bottling output and market dynamics between different wine categories.
