French vineyard wins national innovation award for agroecology in historic first

For the first time, a vineyard has won the National Innovation Award at the Trophées de l’Agroécologie, an event organized by the French Ministry of Agriculture. The award was presented a few days ago to Domaine de Roquenégade, located in Val-de-Dagne within the Corbières AOC region. This marks a significant shift, as the prize had previously only been awarded to farms specializing in large-scale crops, livestock, or vegetable production.

Domaine de Roquenégade was recognized for its agricultural model that combines polyculture, regenerative viticulture, and technical self-sufficiency. The approach is deeply rooted in the local landscape and designed to address challenges brought on by climate change. The estate covers 15 hectares and is certified organic. It features a range of practices such as replanting old and Mediterranean grape varieties, hand pruning and harvesting, permanent ground cover, and agroforestry.

The vineyard operates without irrigation and integrates grapevines with olive trees, pistachio trees, aromatic plants, and livestock including sheep and goats. Each element of the farm supports the others, creating a system that maximizes resources and resilience. The model aims to regenerate soil health and promote biodiversity while maintaining wine production at its core.

Émilie Gal and Alexis Gaudin, founders of Domaine de Roquenégade, said the award is an important recognition of their efforts over the past four years. They also see it as a way to advance agroecology in the Corbières region. According to them, this achievement demonstrates that agricultural diversity and viticulture can progress together.

The Trophées de l’Agroécologie highlight innovative approaches in French agriculture that respond to environmental challenges. By awarding Domaine de Roquenégade, the Ministry of Agriculture signals growing support for regenerative practices in viticulture—a sector often seen as less adaptable to agroecological methods compared to other types of farming.
