Macron Hosts Global Leaders at One Health Summit

John Barker, the director general of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, attended the high-level meetings of the One Health Summit in Lyon on April 7, where President Emmanuel Macron hosted heads of state, ministers, leaders of international organizations and scientists to discuss global health challenges and possible responses.

The summit focused on practical steps to address health threats affecting people around the world, with commitments made on several fronts. For the OIV, the most relevant message was the emphasis on the close connection between environmental health and the health of society as a whole, a view that aligns with the organization’s work on sustainability.

Across the meetings, speakers repeatedly stressed the need for action, the central role of science and the importance of cooperation among countries. Those themes closely match the OIV’s own priorities as it works with governments and industry groups on wine policy, research and sustainable practices.

The OIV said it welcomed the initiative and congratulated the organizers and participants for bringing together political leaders and experts around a shared public health agenda.
