The Aosta Valley has joined Italy’s wine research network, as the Institut agricole régional signed a memorandum of understanding at Vinitaly to enter the Vitelab Network, a group of 11 applied research centers in northern Italy focused on viticulture and wine production.
The agreement is meant to strengthen scientific and institutional cooperation in the sector, with an emphasis on innovation, sustainability and the competitiveness of local producers. The regions represented in the network account for about 40% of Italy’s vineyard area, according to the organizers.
The signing came after an institutional meeting that brought together regional agriculture officials and leaders of the research bodies involved. The goal is to create closer ties between researchers, public institutions and the wine supply chain at a time when producers are facing pressure from climate change, disease and market competition.
Speranza Girod, the Aosta Valley regional agriculture assessor, said the region’s entry into the network was a strategic move to support the competitiveness of its wine sector and highlight the identity of Alpine grape varieties.
The Institut agricole régional serves as the Aosta Valley’s main center for agricultural research and experimentation. Within Vitelab, it will contribute expertise in mountain viticulture, including grape growing at high altitude, the protection of native varieties and adaptation to changing climate conditions.
