The Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia is expanding its presence in Asia with a new strategy focused on Japan and China. The organization, which oversees the promotion and protection of Sicilia DOC wines, has launched a series of activities aimed at increasing awareness and market share in these two countries. The approach includes participation in major trade fairs, educational events, and direct engagement with industry professionals.
From March 10 to 13, the Consorzio participated in Foodex Tokyo, one of Asia’s largest food and beverage trade shows. The group hosted a stand in the FoodEx Wine hall, featuring wines from five Sicilian wineries present at the event and samples from nine additional estates. The tasting counter highlighted native Sicilian grape varieties such as Grillo and Nero d’Avola, as well as Frappato, Carricante, and Nerello Mascalese. According to Camillo Pugliesi, Director of the Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia, feedback from Japanese professionals was especially positive for the white wines. Two masterclasses led by Japanese wine expert Isao Miyajima provided further education for attendees and encouraged dialogue between Sicilian producers and Japanese trade representatives.
The Consorzio’s efforts in Japan will continue on July 7 with an event in Tokyo dedicated entirely to Sicilia DOC wines. Around twenty wineries are expected to participate in a walk-around tasting designed to increase visibility for the appellation among local buyers and sommeliers.
In China, the Consorzio is preparing for VinitalyChengdu, which will take place from March 22 to 25 at the Shangri-La Hotel. This event is organized by Veronafiere and is considered a key opportunity for Italian wine producers seeking to enter or expand in the Chinese market. The Consorzio’s participation is being carried out in collaboration with ICE Beijing, Italy’s trade agency office in China. During the event, General Director Camillo Pugliesi will speak at “Italy’s Wine & Spirits Industry Forum,” where he will discuss market trends and opportunities for Italian wine in China.
To support its activities in China, the Consorzio has increased its use of WeChat, China’s leading social media platform. This move aims to reach local consumers and professionals more effectively and to strengthen brand recognition for Sicilia DOC wines.
Camillo Pugliesi emphasized that these initiatives are part of a broader commitment to understanding complex markets like China and building relationships with local institutions and stakeholders. He stated that ongoing promotion and communication efforts are essential for consolidating the presence of Sicilia DOC wines in Asia and creating new business opportunities.
Looking ahead, strategies for entering new markets will be discussed at a conference during Vinitaly on April 14 at 10:30 a.m. in Hall 2. The event will feature speakers from across the international wine industry who will share insights on global trends and best practices.
The Consorzio’s integrated approach reflects a recognition that Asian markets are increasingly interested in quality wines with strong regional identities. By focusing on education, direct engagement, and digital outreach, the organization aims to position Sicilian wines as leading choices among Asian consumers and professionals.
