The World’s Best Sommeliers’ Selection 2026 was announced this week, highlighting 115 wines from 16 countries after a rigorous tasting and debate process led by some of the world’s most respected sommeliers. The event, now in its third edition, brought together 29 sommeliers and wine directors from 17 countries across six continents. The panel was convened through the global network of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and chaired by Kristell Monot, head sommelier at Mugaritz in Spain.
The final list includes wines of all colors and styles, ranging from classic labels to innovative new releases. More than half of the selected wines come from Europe, with Italy, Portugal, Spain, and France leading the way. Emerging wine-producing nations such as the Czech Republic and Greece also received recognition.
Italy topped the list with 20 wines, including 13 reds. The Nebbiolo grape stood out with four Barolo and Barbaresco selections. Contemporary styles were also recognized, such as Clara Marcelli’s Garnacha from Marche and Tenuta Del Paguro’s Merlot aged underwater in Emilia-Romagna. Sicilian producer Arianna Occhipinti earned three spots for her organic, terroir-driven wines. Italy’s representation also included four whites, one rosé, and two sparkling wines.
Portugal followed with 18 wines on the list. The country’s indigenous varieties were highlighted through white wines like Quinta dos Carvalhais’ Encruzado from Dão and Quinta do Vallado’s blend from Douro. Eight reds from Douro were included, along with three Ports and two Madeiras, reinforcing Portugal’s reputation for fortified wines.
Spain secured 12 spots, mainly for its reds from Ribera del Duero, Rioja, and Priorat. Two sherries—a Fino and an Amontillado—were selected, reflecting renewed interest in fortified Spanish wines. Spain also had a Cava sparkling wine and two contemporary whites: a Chardonnay from Chivite in Navarra and a Viura-Chardonnay blend from Bodegas Faustino in Rioja.
France was recognized for its sparkling and rosé wines, while Germany received praise for its Riesling. The Czech Republic made an impression with three wines from Gurdau: a Riesling, a Grüner Veltliner, and a Sekt sparkling wine. Georgia was represented by Shumi Winery with two traditional varietals—Saperavi and Kisi—and the only orange wine on the list. Greece appeared with both a white and a red from Ktima Gerovassiliou in Macedonia.
The selection process involved sommeliers representing restaurants ranked in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list, including Gaggan (No.6), Table by Bruno Verjus (No.8), Don Julio (No.10), Potong (No.13), Plénitude (No.14), and Ikoyi (No.15). The panel aimed to create a reliable reference for hospitality professionals worldwide.
The World’s Best Sommeliers’ Selection is available online with tasting notes and pairing recommendations provided by the sommeliers. Advanced search tools allow users to discover wines based on terroir characteristics such as altitude or climate, seasonality, or food pairings rather than just grape variety.
