Italy reduced its wine exports between January and September 2025, according to data from Italian customs analyzed by the Interprofessional Wine Organization of Spain (OIVE). The country’s total wine exports fell by 2.2% in value, reaching €5.714 billion, a decrease of €127.9 million compared to the same period in 2024. In terms of volume, exports dropped by 0.9%, totaling 1.545 billion liters, which is 13.5 million liters less than the previous year. The average price per liter also declined by 1.3%, settling at €3.70.
Packaged wines, which include sparkling, bottled, and bag-in-box formats, saw a decrease in both value and volume. Exports in this category dropped by 2.3% in value to €5.486 billion and by 0.3% in volume to 1.291 billion liters. The average price for packaged wine fell by 2% to €4.25 per liter.
Bulk wine exports from Italy showed a different trend during the same period. While the value increased slightly by 0.6% to €228.3 million, the volume exported decreased by 3.4%, totaling 253.7 million liters. The average price for bulk wine rose by 4.2%, reaching €0.90 per liter.
The United States remained the leading destination for Italian wine exports in terms of value, with imports totaling €1.346 billion during the first nine months of 2025, although this figure represents a decline of 4.1% compared to the same period in 2024. Germany followed with €840.1 million, marking a growth of 2.3%. In terms of volume, Germany was the top importer with 345 million liters, down by 3.4%, while the United States imported 256.2 million liters, a decrease of 2.3%.
The United Kingdom ranked third among export destinations for Italian wine both in value and volume, importing 186.7 million liters (down by 0.6%) and spending €587.4 million (down by 2.3%). Other significant markets included Canada, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Russia.
Overall, Italy’s wine export market faced challenges in early 2025, with declines in both value and volume for packaged wines and a slight increase in bulk wine prices despite lower volumes shipped abroad. The United States continues to be the most important market for Italian wines by value, while Germany leads in terms of volume imported from Italy during this period.
