Vega Sicilia Invests €20 Million in New Albariño Project

Vega Sicilia, one of Spain's most prestigious wineries, is expanding its presence in Galicia with the construction of its first winery in the region. Originally from Ribera del Duero, the group is moving forward with its project in Rías Baixas, a well-known area for Albariño wines, which have seen growing international demand. Announced in 2022, this initiative involves building a production facility and acquiring vineyards, with a total investment of approximately €20 million.

Since June 2023, the group has been led by Alberto Álvarez Ayuso. So far, it has acquired 24 hectares of vineyards, and its wines from the new winery will be marketed under the 'Deiva' and 'Arnela' brands. The first release, expected in 2027, will come from the 2024 harvest, indicating that the wines will undergo aging rather than being young Albariños. The company's goal is to produce between 300,000 and 350,000 bottles annually. The project will be managed through a dedicated company, Bodegas y Viñedos Deiva.

This expansion adds to the four existing wineries under the Vega Sicilia umbrella. The group owns Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia in Toro, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión in Ribera del Duero, and Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia (Macán) in Rioja Alavesa, a joint venture with the Rothschild family. Macán operates a 10,000-square-meter winery in Samaniego, Álava, and cultivates 100 hectares of vineyards.

In 2023, Vega Sicilia reported €60 million in revenue, selling 282,788 bottles, with 64% of sales going to foreign markets. The company distributes its wines in 149 countries and serves 4,500 clients worldwide. With a history spanning 40 years, it has solidified its reputation as one of the world's most respected wine producers. In 2023, it was named the best winery in the world at the Golden Vines Awards, an accolade regarded as the 'Oscars of Wine.'
