Hospices de Beaune names Doutey, Judor and Bedia to front its 2026 charity barrel
The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru lot will raise money for ALS research and epidermolysis bullosa patients on Nov. 15

The 2026 Hospices de Beaune wine auction will feature French actors and comedians Mélanie Doutey, Éric Judor and Ramzy Bedia as celebrity patrons of its headline charity lot, organizers said on Saturday.
The three public figures will help promote bidding on the Pièce des Présidents, the auction’s traditional presidential barrel, a 228-liter cask sold for a charitable cause outside the Hospices de Beaune itself. For the November 15 sale, the barrel will support rare disease charities and will contain a Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, one of Burgundy’s most prestigious wines.
Proceeds from that lot will be split between two French organizations. One is the Association pour la Recherche sur la Sclérose Latérale Amyotrophique, which supports research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known in France as Charcot disease. Éric Judor and Ramzy Bedia are backing that cause. The other beneficiary is DEBRA France, which helps patients with epidermolysis bullosa, a group of incurable genetic disorders that leave the skin extremely fragile. Doutey is the patron of DEBRA France.
The presidential barrel is the symbolic high point of the annual sale and often draws the strongest competition from bidders. Its price can rise far above the value of an ordinary cask because of its charitable purpose and the publicity surrounding it. The record to beat remains the €810,000 paid in 2022, excluding fees, which worked out to roughly €2,700 per bottle before costs.
Even with the high profile of the charity barrel, the broader auction is expected to be smaller than in many recent years because of a reduced harvest. Sotheby’s will offer 432 full barrels and two feuillettes, or half-barrels, at the November 15 sale. According to organizers, that is the second-lowest volume in the history of the auction, which began in 1849.
The smaller offering reflects the growing effect of repeated summer heat waves on vineyard yields in Burgundy. Lower production means fewer lots to sell, which limits the auction’s total revenue even if bidding remains strong on individual wines. As a result, the overall proceeds are not expected to surpass the record €29 million raised in 2022, excluding fees.
The Hospices de Beaune auction is one of the best-known events in the global wine trade and a major annual moment for Burgundy. It combines a commercial sale of wines from the Hospices’ vineyard estate with a charitable mission tied to the historic hospital institution in Beaune. Buyers, merchants, collectors and wine professionals watch the results closely because the sale offers a high-profile signal about demand for top Burgundy wines and sentiment in the fine wine market.
The presidential barrel occupies a special place in that structure. While most of the auction supports the Hospices de Beaune, the proceeds from that lot traditionally go to a separate charitable cause chosen for the year. The named patrons are expected to encourage bidding and help draw attention to the beneficiary organizations, which often gain wider visibility through the event than they would through a standard fundraising campaign.
The choice of rare diseases as the focus of the 2026 presidential lot places attention on two very different medical causes. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement. Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare inherited condition that causes painful blistering and tearing of the skin from minor friction or trauma. By linking the auction’s showcase barrel to those causes, organizers are using one of Burgundy’s most prominent institutions to channel money and public attention toward patient support and medical research.
The volume of wine available on November 15 also underlines how climate pressures are reshaping even long-established wine events. Burgundy producers have faced a series of weather extremes in recent years, including intense heat and drought, which can cut yields and change the balance of the harvest. For the Hospices de Beaune sale, that has meant a notably shorter catalog in 2026, even as the event keeps its prestige and international reach.
How much the presidential barrel will fetch remains one of the central questions heading into the sale. A Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru already carries strong appeal for collectors and trade buyers. Combined with the involvement of Doutey, Judor and Bedia, and the charitable beneficiaries attached to the lot, that could help push bidding well above the level of a standard cask, even in a year when the auction as a whole is constrained by supply.
