Hofbrauhaus Wolters GmbH, one of Germany’s oldest breweries, has filed for bankruptcy as the country’s beer market continues to contract and production costs remain high.
Foreign media reports cited by AK&M said the brewery has been under financial pressure from weaker beer demand and rising expenses, including energy costs. Management plans to keep production running while reorganizing operations.
The brewery, known for its Wolters brand, is based in Braunschweig in Lower Saxony. It traces its history back about 400 years, making it one of Germany’s longest-established brewers.
The filing comes during a broader downturn for German beer. According to the Union of German Brewers, beer consumption in Germany fell by 5.8% in 2025, while sales dropped by a record 6% to 7.8 billion liters and are still declining.
The trade group also said 137 breweries have ceased operations in Germany over the past six years, including the large brewer Oettinger.
For the drinks industry, the Wolters case adds to signs that Germany’s brewing sector may face further consolidation and a smaller range of producers if weak demand and high operating costs persist. That could affect jobs, supplier relationships and the ability of traditional regional breweries to remain independent.
