Bill Stockton, a resident of Sutton Coldfield, England, marked his 105th birthday with a celebration at Care UK’s Bishops Manor on Jockey Road. The event took place with the support of the care home’s staff, who decorated the facility with balloons and banners and arranged for a special cake prepared by the home’s chef. Bill was joined by close friends and family, including his wife Cynthia, to commemorate the occasion.
Born on November 15, 1920, Bill Stockton is a veteran of the Royal Air Force. He served as a medic during World War II and traveled extensively during his service. After the war, he met Cynthia, whom he married in 1955. The couple settled in Sutton Coldfield and raised their son Martin. Bill and Cynthia have been living together at Bishops Manor since 2023.
When asked about the secret to his longevity, Bill credited his family, an optimistic outlook on life, and what he described as “a good glass of wine always.” He also mentioned that luck, adventure, and the companionship of his wife have played important roles in his long life. “I feel privileged to have reached this ripe old age with my wife by my side,” Bill said during the celebration.
Throughout his life, Bill has enjoyed music, fine dining, dancing, and travel. Many of these interests remain part of his daily routine. Staff at Bishops Manor describe Bill as having a playful sense of humor and a warm presence that has made him popular among residents and staff alike.
Thomas Bampfield, Home Manager at Bishops Manor, said that celebrating milestones like Bill’s birthday is an important part of life at the care home. He noted that both Bill and Cynthia have become central figures in the community since moving in last year.
Bishops Manor provides residential, dementia, and nursing care for its residents. The facility is designed to encourage independence and social interaction through communal spaces for leisure activities. Amenities include a café, hair and beauty salon, and an on-site pub.
The celebration for Bill Stockton highlights not only his personal achievements but also the role of supportive communities in promoting well-being among older adults. As he reflected on more than a century of life experiences, Bill emphasized the importance of family connections and simple pleasures—like enjoying a glass of wine—in maintaining happiness and health over the years.
