Fourth-generation leadership blends tradition, innovation, and sustainability to strengthen the winery’s connection to the Langhe region

Poderi Luigi Einaudi, a winery based in Dogliani in the Cuneo province of Italy’s Piedmont region, is marking a new chapter in its 125-year history. Under the leadership of Matteo Sardagna Einaudi, the company has undergone significant transformation, aiming to represent the Langhe territory more completely through its wines and business philosophy.

Founded in 1897, Poderi Luigi Einaudi has long been recognized for its deep roots in the region and its commitment to quality. In recent years, however, the company has experienced a period of rapid growth and change. Matteo Sardagna Einaudi, who represents the fourth generation of the family, has led this evolution with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and authenticity.

One of the most notable changes under Matteo’s direction is the expansion of vineyard holdings. In 2010, Poderi Luigi Einaudi managed 8.78 hectares of Nebbiolo grapes, including those used for Barbaresco and Barolo wines. By 2025, that number had grown to 28.54 hectares. The area dedicated specifically to Nebbiolo for Barolo production increased from 6.88 hectares to 13.96 hectares over the same period. This expansion has allowed the winery to acquire some of the most important vineyards classified as CRAs (crus) for Barolo DOCG and Barbaresco DOCG.

Matteo’s approach to winemaking is shaped by his personal connection to Dogliani and his family’s legacy. He spent his childhood among the vineyards with his grandfather and mother, learning about the land and developing a strong sense of belonging. This bond with the territory now forms the foundation of his vision for the company.

A key moment in this transformation was Matteo’s partnership with Croatian winemaker Zvonimir Jurkovic, known as “Zvone.” Their collaboration is built on a shared passion for the region and a desire to explore every nuance of its terroir. Together, they have worked to interpret each vineyard with respect and sensitivity, allowing the unique character of each site to come through in the wines.

In 2019, Poderi Luigi Einaudi completed a major renovation of its cellar. This investment marked a turning point for the company, introducing new ideas and a renewed stylistic approach both in winemaking and corporate strategy. For Matteo, wine is not just a product but an expression of self and place.

Today, Poderi Luigi Einaudi stands out for its commitment to enhancing native grape varieties using modern techniques and sustainable practices. The wines continue to tell the story of Piedmont’s Langhe region in a way that appeals to both Italian and international consumers.

The company remains focused on balancing tradition with innovation. Every decision—from vineyard management to winemaking processes—is made with an eye toward building a solid future while maintaining strong ties to its origins. Under Matteo Sardagna Einaudi’s leadership, Poderi Luigi Einaudi continues to evolve as it seeks new perspectives and opportunities in the world of fine wine.
