The Macallan Unveils a Bond Whisky for the 55th Anniversary of Diamonds Are Forever

The Macallan is releasing a limited-edition single malt to mark the 55th anniversary of “Diamonds Are Forever,” the James Bond film that helped cement 007’s image as a man with exacting taste and a taste for fine drinks. The new whisky, called The Macallan Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release, draws on the film’s themes of secrecy, elegance and deception, while also nodding to Bond’s well-known connection to sherry and wine.

The Scotch house said the bottling was created by whisky maker Russell Greig and distilled in 2007 before spending 18 years in cask. It will be sold at a suggested retail price of $800. The release follows The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Release from 2022 and extends a partnership that has become one of the more visible crossovers between luxury spirits and film branding.

The company said the whisky was matured in custom hybrid casks made from European and American oak seasoned with sherry, along with American oak casks that previously held red wine. That combination was chosen to reflect scenes in “Diamonds Are Forever” in which Bond uses his knowledge of wine to uncover clues. The distillery described the result as a whisky with depth and light sweetness, built to mirror the film’s shifting plot.

The official tasting notes point to polished oak, vanilla bean and ripe dried fruit on the nose. On the palate, The Macallan says it opens with silky layers of caramel and cocoa-dusted champagne truffles, followed by coffee, figs, berries and apricots, with a touch of nutmeg. The finish is described as long and refined. It is bottled at 45.5% alcohol by volume and has a natural color said to evoke the red-orange sandstone of the Nevada desert around Las Vegas, where part of the film is set.

The bottle and presentation box use imagery drawn from original “Diamonds Are Forever” production materials kept in James Bond archives. Among the visual references are the laser satellite and the opening title sequence, details meant to connect the whisky directly to the film’s design language. The Macallan said those elements also reflect its own emphasis on craftsmanship and presentation.

Russell Greig said in a statement that the whisky “keeps its secrets” and may seem dark and mysterious but reveals elegance and lightness on the palate. Jaume Ferras, The Macallan’s creative director, said the company has long had ties to film and television, appearing in more than 290 productions over the years, and that this release was intended as a tribute to Bond’s lasting influence on cinema.

The launch arrives as luxury spirits makers continue to lean on film anniversaries and franchise partnerships to reach collectors willing to pay premium prices for limited releases. For The Macallan, which has built much of its reputation on sherry cask maturation and high-end packaging, the Bond tie-in offers another way to link its brand with themes of heritage, precision and spectacle.
