Over 940,000 Bottles of Costco Prosecco Recalled for Shattering Risk Ahead of Thanksgiving

A major safety alert has been issued in the United States as more than 940,000 bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco, sold by Costco Wholesale Corporation, are being recalled due to the risk that the bottles may spontaneously break or shatter. The recall comes just days before Thanksgiving, a time when many Americans purchase sparkling wines for holiday gatherings.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall after receiving at least 10 reports of bottles breaking or shattering unexpectedly, including one report of a consumer suffering a laceration. The affected bottles were sold between April 25 and August 26, 2025, across twelve Midwestern states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

According to the CPSC and Costco’s guidance, the bottles can break without warning even if they have not been opened or handled. This presents a clear risk of injury from flying glass. Consumers who purchased Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco with item number 1879870 during the specified dates are urged not to open the bottles under any circumstances.

Costco has instructed customers not to return the bottles to stores for safety reasons. Instead, consumers should carefully dispose of any unopened bottles by wrapping them in paper towels, placing them in a sturdy plastic bag, and discarding them in household trash. This method is intended to minimize the risk of injury from broken glass.

Customers who received a notification letter from Costco about the recall can obtain a full refund by presenting the letter. If anyone is injured by broken glass from these bottles, they are advised to seek medical attention and report the incident to the CPSC.

The timing of this recall is significant as it coincides with preparations for Thanksgiving celebrations. Sparkling wines like prosecco are popular choices for holiday meals and gatherings. The large number of bottles affected and their presence on festive tables have heightened concern among consumers and retailers.

This incident highlights the importance of strict quality control measures for importers, distributors, and retailers handling beverages under pressure such as sparkling wines. The rapid response by Costco and federal authorities aims to prevent further injuries and ensure consumer safety during one of the busiest times of year for wine sales in the United States.
