The Old Vine Registry, a global database for vineyards aged 35 years and older, has reached a new milestone with 4,000 entries from 39 countries. This brings the registry closer to its goal of registering 10,000 vineyards by 2027. The registry was launched in June 2023 by Master of Wine Jancis Robinson as a public online resource, funded by Jackson Family Wines and managed by Alder Yarrow of Vinography.com. The registry is owned by the non-profit organization, The Old Vine Conference.
Since its launch, the registry has grown steadily, starting with 2,183 entries and now reaching the 4,000 vineyard mark. Vineyards planted in 1990 are now eligible for inclusion in the registry as they have turned 35-years-old.
The registry's future growth could be influenced by recent recommendations from The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), an intergovernmental body dealing with viticulture and winemaking. The OIV has urged wine regions worldwide to promote and catalog old vineyards and grapevines.
Alder Yarrow, the registry's manager, expressed optimism about the OIV's resolution, hoping it would encourage producers and regions to share information about their old vines. The Old Vine Registry is also seeking volunteers for research and financial donors to support the non-profit project. Vineyard producers are encouraged to submit their vineyards at www.oldvineregistry.org.
