Barcelona Wine Week (BWW) will hold its next edition from February 3 to 5, 2025, at Fira de Barcelona, focusing on the revaluation of wines made from old vines. This theme will take center stage in the event's program, which aims to be the largest edition to date, with more than 1,200 exhibitors and an expected attendance of over 24,000 industry professionals. The event seeks to solidify its position as a key gathering for Spain's wine sector.
Renowned winemakers, sommeliers, and international experts will participate in a comprehensive lineup of tastings and conferences. Confirmed speakers include Raúl Pérez, one of Spain's most influential winemakers, and Fernando Mora, Master of Wine and advocate for the revival of garnacha grapes. Masters of Wine such as Doug Frost, Tim Atkin, and Pedro Ballesteros will also host sessions addressing current industry trends.
One of the event's highlights will be an exclusive tasting of wines made from pre-phylloxera vines, some over 300 years old. This tasting will feature wines from Bodegas El Grifo in Lanzarote, Bodegas Gerardo Méndez in Pontevedra, and Javier Sanz Viticultores in Valladolid, showcasing the historical and viticultural value of these ancient vines. The Wine Tasting Journey space, sponsored by Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, will offer a self-guided tasting of more than 80 old-vine wine references from various Spanish regions.
The program will also address rising trends, such as the growing popularity of white wines. A session on this topic will feature sommeliers María José Huertas of Paco Roncero and Rodrigo Briseño of Disfrutar. Additionally, pressing issues like climate change will be discussed. Wineries including Abadía Retuerta, Matarromera, Raventós Codorníu, and Perelada will participate in a debate on water management and drought resilience.
Gender equality in the wine industry will be another focus. The "Vinos de Autora" tasting will highlight the work of female winemakers such as Mayte Calvo of Bodegas Bilbaínas, Laura Tragant of Codorníu, Anne Cannan of Clos Figueres, and Martina Prieto of Bodegas Prieto Pariente. The first Isabel Mijares Awards, organized by the Mujeres del Vino association, will be presented to recognize outstanding female professionals in various categories. Finalists include Marta Casas of Parés Baltà, Mireia Torres of Jean Leon, and Masters of Wine Jancis Robinson and Almudena Alberca.
The tasting program will feature monographic sessions of particular interest, such as "The 10 Magnificent Wines of D.O. Rías Baixas," showcasing top wines from this denomination known for their quality and evolution. A special tasting to commemorate the 100th anniversary of D.O.Ca Rioja will include eight wines from historic Rioja vineyards, led by Pedro Ballesteros. He will also direct a tasting of emblematic wines from D.O. Terra Alta, focusing on long-aged garnacha and cariñena varieties.
A new addition to this year's event is the first edition of the Estrella Awards, which will honor the best wine lists from Spanish bars and restaurants. The awards are organized by the renowned Star Wine List guide. BWW will also host the Best Sommelier of Catalonia competition and the inaugural International Wine Tourism Forum, organized by the Catalan Tourism Agency, featuring speakers from Bordeaux, Porto, Georgia, and China who will share successful wine tourism projects.
With a rich agenda combining tastings, educational sessions, and industry debates, Barcelona Wine Week is set to become an essential event for wine professionals. The focus on old-vine wines, shifting consumption trends, and environmental challenges will ensure that Spanish wine remains at the forefront of global industry discussions.
