The House of Suntory, a revered name in the annals of Japanese whisky history and a pioneer in its craft, has taken a significant step by actively engaging in the establishment of a Geographical Indication (GI) for Japanese whisky. This move not only reinforces their leadership position in the market but also underscores their commitment to preserving the authenticity and excellence of this beloved beverage.

For over a century, Suntory has been a key player in promoting and preserving Japanese whisky, elevating it to a globally recognized and respected status. Participating in the creation of a GI is a natural step for the company, aimed at continuing to foster the quality and genuine character of Japanese whisky. This initiative marks a significant turning point, poised to strengthen the unique culture and craftsmanship that have defined this spirit over the years.

Additionally, The House of Suntory has voluntarily adhered to the standards set by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA). This ensures that all their Japanese whiskies destined for export are distilled, matured, and bottled exclusively in Japan, meeting all the requirements of the new GI. This commitment is also reflected in their product labels, which now clearly indicate compliance with these regulations. The company has also announced a set of measures to be implemented in the coming years to combat the improper labeling and sale of products as Japanese whisky.

Masaki Morimoto, the president of The House of Suntory, emphasized the importance of this designation: "We believe this GI will help maintain integrity and further enhance the category. It's not just a great day for Suntory but for the entire industry and, of course, for whisky enthusiasts around the world. Tradition, quality, and innovation are fundamental for us, and we are proud to continue proving it through our artful distillation and blending."

The creation of the GI and adherence to JSLMA standards primarily aim to ensure that all whiskies labeled as Japanese Whisky are genuinely produced in Japan. To this end, several stringent criteria must be met: the water used must be from Japan; the processes of saccharification, fermentation, and distillation must be carried out in Japanese distilleries; distillation cannot exceed 95% ABV; the product must age in wooden casks, no larger than 700 liters, in Japan for at least three years; and bottling must take place in Japan, ensuring a minimum alcohol content of 40% ABV. Additionally, the use of natural caramel coloring (E150) is permitted.

Among the brands from The House of Suntory adopting these new labeling standards are The Yamazaki Single Malt Japanese Whisky, The Hakushu Single Malt Japanese Whisky, The Chita Single Grain Japanese Whisky, Hibiki Blended Japanese Whisky, Toki Blended Japanese Whisky, and Suntory Whisky "Kakubin" Blended Japanese Whisky, all available on the global market, along with Suntory Old Blended Japanese Whisky, Suntory Royal Blended Japanese Whisky, and Suntory Special Reserve Blended Japanese Whisky.
