Vineyards are taking root in parts of northern France that were long outside the country’s traditional wine map, as growers in Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France test whether climate change and new planting rules can support a lasting wine industry farther north.
The movement is still small by French standards. But it is visible on the ground. Near Lisieux, in the Calvados department of Normandy, Sébastien Fricker settled on four hectares in 2020 in an area where a protected wine geographical indication has existed since 2009. Fricker comes from five generations of winegrowers in Saumur, in the Loire Valley. He said he left the family stronghold because of rising temperatures and poorer soils.
He chose the commune of Marolles for practical reasons. He described the limestone subsoil as a natural sponge that holds moisture, said the topsoil is much richer than in the Loire Valley, and pointed to a stable climate with fewer storms and smaller temperature swings. Even after late-summer heat waves, he said, the vegetation there remains green.
For now, Fricker said, Normandy suits his production of Chardonnay, Chenin and Cabernet. In his view, a broader shift in French winegrowing is unavoidable. He argues that production will no longer be able to stay concentrated in the south and that regions such as Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France will have to play a larger role in French viticulture.
At this stage, however, Normandy’s production remains very limited. The region has about 20 producers working roughly 20 hectares, compared with 85,000 hectares in the Bordeaux area. Annual output is under 100,000 bottles. Maxime Gazeau, who works with the Norman winegrowers’ union, said sales are not the main problem because nearly all the wine is sold directly by producers. The harder task, he said, is making consistently high-quality wine.
Farther south and west, on the Brittany coast in Theix-Noyalo in the Morbihan department, Marina and Loïc Fourrure have been developing six hectares of vines since 2021. Their site overlooks a sea inlet and marshland. They say the project grew out of inherited family land, a legal change in 2016 that allowed new vineyards to be planted in France without a geographical indication, and a belief that Brittany has become a place where vines can be planted successfully.
Their harvest started on Aug. 22, an unusually early date that reflects the changes growers are watching closely. Marina Fourrure rejects the idea that warming is simply creating new opportunities. Since the couple started, she said, every year has been different and the weather has become deeply unsettled.
Her husband described a sequence of damaging extremes: frost, drought, heavy rain and then harvesting in August. For him, that pattern does not point to easy gains from a warmer climate. It shows how unstable the conditions have become even in areas that now appear more suitable for vineyards than they once did.
About 50 estates across 160 hectares are now grouped within the Association of Breton Winegrowers, which Loïc Fourrure co-chairs. He said the group believes it has shown that viticulture in Brittany has long-term potential. At the same time, he cautioned against treating the region as a new wine El Dorado. The full sector still has to be built, from vineyard development to production and market identity, and that takes time. He said vines planted now may need two decades to reach their full ability to produce high-quality fruit.
Researchers studying the shift say the picture is mixed. Valérie Bonnardot, a researcher at Rennes 2 University who examines the effects of climate change on viticulture, said rising temperatures have improved sugar levels in grapes. But she also stressed that temperature is only one part of the equation. Rainfall and humidity matter as well, and Brittany has seen increasingly uneven precipitation patterns, a factor that can complicate both grape development and disease control.
In Hauts-de-France, on France’s northern edge, vineyards have also expanded since 2016. They now cover about 130 hectares and include fewer than 100 growers, according to Bruno Cardot, a winegrower based in the Aisne department. He said the region now has a climate similar to what the Champagne wine region experienced in the 1970s. In his assessment, climate change is clearly pushing crops northward in France, including vines.
Even there, the market remains mostly local. Cardot said the growth in regional wine production is being driven above all by demand for local products. Most winegrowers in Hauts-de-France are not trying to export, he said. Their first customers are people nearby.
The small scale of these new vineyards highlights both the promise and the limits of the northern expansion. In Normandy, direct sales have so far absorbed output with little difficulty, but quality remains the central test. In Brittany, growers are still laying the foundations of an industry while dealing with volatile weather. In Hauts-de-France, producers are benefiting from local interest but are not yet operating on a national or international scale.
The changes also show how unevenly climate pressure is being felt inside one of the world’s best-known wine countries. Some growers from established regions now see the north as more resilient because of moisture-retaining soils, less violent temperature swings or cooler growing conditions. Others in the new vineyard zones warn that the same climate shift bringing warmer averages is also bringing frost events, drought and bursts of intense rain that make each season harder to predict.
For now, the emerging vineyards of Brittany, Normandy and Hauts-de-France remain a small part of French wine production. But the people planting them are betting that the country’s wine geography is no longer fixed, and that regions once seen as marginal may have a place in the next chapter of French viticulture.
