Italy’s farm and food fraud inspectorate has authorized Valoritalia s.r.l. to carry out official controls for the Canelli DOCG wine denomination, according to a notice published on July 8 by the Agriculture Ministry’s ICQRF office.
The authorization was issued under Article 64 of Law No. 238 of Dec. 12, 2016, Italy’s consolidated wine law. The measure gives Valoritalia the formal role of control body for the denomination, meaning it will oversee compliance with the production rules tied to Canelli DOCG.
Canelli is a protected sparkling wine denomination from Piedmont, centered on the town of Canelli and linked to Moscato Bianco grapes. As with other Italian DOCG wines, producers must follow a detailed specification covering matters such as grape origin, production methods and labeling. The control body checks that those rules are met before wines can be marketed under the denomination.
The ICQRF, whose full name is the Central Inspectorate for Quality Protection and Fraud Repression of Agri-food Products, regularly publishes authorizations and designations for control bodies across Italy’s protected food and wine system. In recent weeks, the office has also issued similar measures involving olive oil, cheese, cured meats and other geographical indications.
For the wine trade, the decision matters because the control body is a key part of how an appellation protects its legal identity in the market. Official verification can help support traceability for bottles sold as Canelli DOCG and may reduce the risk of misuse or fraud at a time when protected names remain commercially valuable in domestic and export channels.
The ministry notice did not provide further operational details in the text visible on its public page, such as the duration of the authorization or any transition arrangements from a previous controller if one existed. But the publication confirms that Valoritalia is now authorized to perform the checks required for the denomination under Italian law.
Valoritalia is one of Italy’s best-known certification bodies in the wine sector and has long worked with appellations across the country. Its appointment places Canelli within the broader system of third-party oversight used in Italy to enforce denomination rules and maintain confidence in regulated wine categories.
The July 8 publication appeared in the ICQRF’s list of latest measures for 2026 on the ministry website, where it was listed among other recent authorizations issued by the department. The entry identified the measure as an authorization for Valoritalia to conduct control activities for the Canelli DOCG wine denomination.
