Rioja Intensifies Britain Push With 100 Wines Tasted

The Rioja wine region is stepping up its commercial push in Britain with a new promotional program aimed at importers, retailers and sommeliers, as the Spanish denomination seeks to deepen its presence in one of its most important export markets.

The Rioja regulatory council said on Thursday that it had organized a series of activities both in Spain and in the United Kingdom as part of its international promotion strategy. Last week, about 10 British wine professionals traveled through Rioja’s three subregions to visit wineries and vineyards and taste nearly 100 wines from the appellation.

The visits brought together sommeliers, importers and independent retailers who were shown a wide range of styles, from traditional wines to more modern expressions. The council said 22 wineries took part in the initiative. More than 70 wines were tasted during the vineyard and winery visits, and another 30 were presented at a speed tasting session held at the council’s headquarters.

Participants described the trip as a chance to broaden their understanding of Rioja and expand their selections for British consumers. One retailer said the contrast between historic wineries and newer producers showed how Rioja continues to combine tradition with innovation. Another said the experience helped him discover wines with different styles and nuances.

The council said the British market will remain a priority through the fall and into the Christmas season, when promotional efforts are expected to intensify. Planned activities will target both consumers and trade professionals. Among them is Rioja Wine Quiz, a new educational event scheduled for September that will pair a trivia-style competition with a tasting session.

The event is aimed at sommeliers, retailers, independent merchants and opinion leaders, with the goal of strengthening knowledge of Rioja’s wines and the diversity of the denomination.
