Non-Alcoholic Beverage Market Sees Rapid Growth Across Europe

A recent study commissioned by the European Commission highlights a strong growth trend for no- and low-alcohol beverages in the European Union. The research, conducted by Areté and Agra Ceas Consulting, projects that non-alcoholic spirits will see a compound annual growth rate of 20.6% through 2028. This forecast reflects a significant shift in consumer preferences across Europe.

The economic report shows that the market for low- and no-alcohol (LNA) beverages in the EU increased from about 7.5 billion euros in 2021 to nearly 9 billion euros in 2023. This marks a 17.3% rise over two years, indicating growing demand for alternatives to traditional alcoholic drinks.

Transparency Market Research also contributed data to the sector analysis, estimating the global market for non-alcoholic spirits—including alcohol-free bitters and distilled beverages—at $1.2 billion. The segment is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7.4% until 2034, suggesting that this trend is not limited to Europe but is part of a broader international movement.

Analysts attribute this growth to two main factors. First, there is an increasing desire among consumers to reduce potential risks associated with alcohol consumption, particularly regarding driving safety. Second, there is a rising focus on health and wellness, especially among younger generations who are more likely to seek out healthier lifestyle choices.

Producers and retailers across the EU are responding by expanding their offerings of no- and low-alcohol products. Bars, restaurants, and supermarkets are dedicating more shelf space and menu options to these beverages, reflecting both consumer demand and regulatory encouragement for responsible drinking.

The study’s findings suggest that the LNA beverage sector will continue to expand as health consciousness grows and social attitudes toward alcohol evolve. The data points to a future where non-alcoholic options become a standard part of beverage menus throughout Europe and beyond.
