Dominus Estate, the Napa Valley winery owned by Bordeaux’s Moueix family, has made a significant move by acquiring the 86-acre Yountville Ranch Vineyard from Markham Vineyards. The purchase marks a major expansion for Dominus and reunites land that traces its origins to an 1836 Mexican land grant to Napa pioneer George Yount. The transaction, completed between two of the region’s most established wine producers, was finalized without public disclosure of the purchase price.
The Yountville Ranch is located on the southern edge of the Rutherford Bench in the Yountville District, directly neighboring Dominus’ Napanook vineyard. Both properties share a unique terroir characterized by gravelly loam, fine-grained silt, and clay soils at the base of the Mayacamas range. This area is recognized for producing some of Napa Valley’s most sought-after wines. With this acquisition, Dominus now controls more than 200 acres of contiguous vineyards stretching across the western side of Yountville and Oakville—a rare concentration of prime Napa Valley land.
The history of Yountville Ranch is deeply rooted in Napa’s viticultural heritage. Originally part of George Yount’s land grant, it was later acquired by Bruce Markham in 1975 and became the source for Markham Vineyards’ first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978. The property has been farmed continuously for over a century and has served as a model for sustainable viticulture practices in Napa Valley, including cover cropping, composting, and sheep grazing to enrich soils and manage vine growth.
Dominus Estate was founded by Christian Moueix in 1983 after he studied at UC Davis and worked under legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyards. Moueix later partnered with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith to produce wines from their family’s Napanook vineyard before acquiring it outright in 1994. In 2008, he added Ulysses, a 40-acre site in Oakville purchased from Clark Swanson. The new acquisition places Dominus’ holdings between Napanook and Ulysses, creating an unbroken stretch of estate vineyards.
Currently, Dominus produces three wines—Dominus, Napanook, and Othello—from its estate vineyards. The Napanook vineyard is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The newly acquired Yountville Ranch is planted mostly to Merlot. Christian Moueix has indicated plans to replant much of the site over time, with an eye toward increasing Cabernet Franc plantings due to its finesse and adaptability to changing climate conditions.
Dominus will take over management of Yountville Ranch after the 2025 harvest. Grapes from the new property will be integrated into Dominus’ wine production starting with the 2026 vintage. Moueix described the acquisition as a “natural extension” of Dominus Estate and emphasized his long-term commitment to Napa Valley despite current challenges facing the wine industry, including subdued market demand and increased pressure on land use.
Moueix remains optimistic about Napa’s future, citing his deep connection to its terroir and his confidence in the region’s ability to produce world-class wines. He noted that while Dominus has gradually reduced its Merlot plantings over time, inheriting Merlot vines from Markham presents an opportunity to experiment further with varietal composition as part of a long-term adaptive viticulture program.
The purchase brings a large portion of George Yount’s original estate back under single ownership for the first time in generations. It also signals Dominus’ intention to remain a leading force in Napa Valley winemaking for years to come. As Moueix stated following the acquisition, this move represents both a bold new chapter for Dominus Estate and an affirmation of his family’s enduring passion for great wine and great vineyards.
