The IWSC Emerging Talent Awards have announced the first two shortlists for 2025, focusing on wine and spirits communication. This year saw 124 applications across six categories, with a notable increase in both quantity and quality. The wine category, in particular, featured a more international array of applicants, highlighting global talent in the field.
In the wine communications category, sponsored by Consorzio di Tutela del Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, the judges narrowed down 36 candidates to four finalists. These include Cokie Ponikvar, a wine vlogger known for her storytelling and educational content; Ellie Scott, recognized for her insightful writing and fresh perspective; Janina Doyle, who combines passion and knowledge in her podcast "Eat Sleep Wine Repeat"; and Paige Comrie, a photographer and influencer noted for her engaging style. Sara Underdown also made the list for her innovative approach to wine education through her platform, Vine & Bubble.
The spirits communication category also presented a strong field of candidates. The shortlist includes Georgie Collins, a journalist who excels at making complex trade topics accessible; Heather Storgaard, who brings a multilingual and global perspective; Katie Spain, who uses her journalistic skills to connect with spirits producers; and Reece Sims, known for her sensory-driven learning and social media presence.
The judges for this year's awards include Giulia Pussini, a marketing and communication specialist; David Kermode, a renowned wine and spirits journalist; Sophia Longhi, an expert in consumer engagement; and Cassandra Charlick, a journalist specializing in drinks, travel, and food.
Cokie Ponikvar, from Canada, is a Master of Wine student with a significant following on Instagram. She has worked as a sommelier and participated in wine harvests in the Finger Lakes and Oregon. Ellie Scott, from the UK, transitioned from finance to wine, founding Amante Wine and becoming a certified Sherry Educator. Janina Doyle, also from the UK, started her wine career as a waitress and now hosts a successful podcast. Paige Comrie, from the US, is a digital marketing expert who helps wineries with social media strategies. Sara Underdown, from Australia, founded VINE & BUBBLE, an online champagne publication.
In the spirits category, Georgie Collins from the UK has a background in journalism and social media management. She has worked with major publications and developed content for global drinks brands. Katie Spain, from Australia, is an award-winning journalist with experience in digital and print media. Heather Storgaard, from the UK, has a background in marketing and content creation, focusing on whisky. Reece Sims, from Canada, is the founder of Flavor Camp and known for her innovative approach to spirits education.
These shortlists highlight the emerging talent shaping the future of wine and spirits communication. Further announcements for the remaining categories are expected later this week.
