Canadian stores are removing American wines, beers, and spirits from their shelves following a call from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This move is in response to the 25% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trudeau encouraged Canadians to support local products by checking labels and choosing Canadian goods whenever possible. His message was shared on his social media account, urging citizens to prioritize Canadian-made products.
The tariffs are part of a broader trade conflict initiated by Trump, targeting major trading partners like Canada, Mexico, and China. In retaliation, both Canada and Mexico have announced their own tariffs on American products, effective March 5. The impact of this trade dispute is already evident as American alcoholic beverages are disappearing from Canadian store shelves.

In Ontario, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) has been directed to restrict sales and imports of U.S. alcoholic beverages. The LCBO, a major buyer of alcoholic products, annually sells American beverages worth about 1 billion Canadian dollars, or approximately $680 million. This decision is part of Ontario's strategy to counter U.S. tariffs.
British Columbia has adopted a slightly different approach by targeting beverages produced in "red states," which are controlled by Trump's Republican Party. This includes well-known brands like Jack Daniels, Bacardi, Titos Vodka, Jim Beam, and Bulleit bourbon. Other provinces, including Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador, are also removing American products from their liquor stores. Signs encouraging customers to "Buy Canadian Instead" are now displayed in these stores.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that the blame lies with President Trump, emphasizing that Canada must respond to the tariffs. The removal of American products is a significant step in the ongoing trade tensions between the two countries.
