François-Xavier Maroteaux Elected President of Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux

François-Xavier Maroteaux has been elected president of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB). At 42, he takes over from Ronan Laborde, who was the director of Château Clinet in Pomerol. Maroteaux owns Château Branaire-Ducru, a fourth grand cru classé in Saint-Julien. The UGCB, which includes 132 of Bordeaux's most iconic properties, announced his election on February 21.

Maroteaux has a background in finance, having studied at the University of Paris-Dauphine. He began his career in banking and later worked at LVMH. In 2015, he joined Château Branaire-Ducru, a property his family acquired in 1988, marking his entry into the wine industry. He has been active in Bordeaux's wine community, holding positions such as president of the ODG Saint-Julien and vice-president of the Federation of Grands Vins de Bordeaux. His father, Patrick Maroteaux, previously held the UGCB presidency from 2000 to 2008.

Maroteaux aims to maintain the collective strength of the Union while adapting to new challenges. He plans to focus on four main areas: enhancing public events, strengthening the French market by reconnecting professionals, consumers, and properties, improving collaboration with traders, and leveraging new technologies like artificial intelligence. He intends to preserve the Union's successful event program and foster collaboration among different appellations to explore potential developments. His leadership will focus on continuity and adaptation, ensuring the Union remains a dynamic force in the wine industry.
