OIV Releases Final Resolution on Responsible Wine Consumption

A year after the first resolution in a series focusing on consumer health protection, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has released its final resolution, OIV-SECSAN 679-2022. This resolution, adopted at the 43rd OIV Congress in Mexico, emphasizes responsible communication about wine consumption. It encourages further research into the relationship between wine and health, and the perception of wine within the context of healthy diets. The resolution provides guidelines for Member States and stakeholders to ensure that information about wine consumption is balanced and scientifically grounded, with the aim of protecting consumer health and enabling informed decision-making.

The OIV's commitment to consumer health protection and food safety is reflected in this resolution. It highlights the importance of accurate information dissemination, considering the risks of excessive drinking and the varying effects based on consumption patterns. The OIV works with Member States to develop and communicate information on scientific research on the health and nutritional aspects of wine and grape products, considering the social context of consumption. This includes monitoring research on the links between wine, grapes, and health, particularly the role of phenolic compounds, while promoting risk reduction associated with harmful alcohol consumption.

The OIV's 2025-2030 strategic plan also covers this topic, emphasizing the need to understand the relationship between the consumption of vitivinicultural products and health. The resolution recommends that communication directed to wine consumers should include information on the risks associated with harmful alcohol consumption, tailored information for at-risk groups, actionable advice to mitigate risks, and drinking limits based on national guidelines. More information can be found on the OIV website under the “Standards and Technical Documents” menu.
