Hungary is turning its attention to China as a key growth market for its wines, spearheading a large-scale campaign to position its products—most notably, the renowned Tokaj wines—in one of the most dynamic and complex wine markets in the world. The initiative, led by Wines of Hungary, seeks to heighten the visibility and availability of Hungarian wines in China, a country whose rapidly evolving consumer landscape offers both opportunity and challenges.

The campaign, launched in September 2024 and set to run through March 2025, marks the first concerted effort by Hungary to promote its wines in China. It will feature a multifaceted approach aimed at building the reputation of Hungarian wines and increasing their recognition among Chinese consumers. According to Wines of Hungary, the campaign is designed to emphasize the distinctiveness of Hungarian wines, ranging from the volcanic soil-driven dry varieties to the world-famous sweet, botrytized wines from the Tokaj region.

Among the highlights of the campaign is a three-day roadshow set to take place in the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Shanghai. This roadshow will host a series of events, from masterclasses to tastings, aimed at both wine professionals and local consumers. The presence of Fongyee Walker, China's first Master of Wine and one of the country's most prominent wine experts, adds significant weight to the campaign. Walker will lead educational sessions tailored to Chinese wine trade specialists and enthusiasts alike, focusing on Hungary's rich viticultural heritage.

Beyond in-person events, digital strategies will play a central role in the campaign. Hungary's wine producers will leverage Chinese social media platforms, including WeChat and RED, to tap into the country's highly active online community. A key part of this effort involves working with influencers who can broaden the campaign's reach and help connect with China's increasingly sophisticated wine consumers. This demonstrates how integral digital marketing has become in penetrating the Chinese market, where trends often spread quickly through social media.

To execute this ambitious campaign, Wines of Hungary has partnered with Nimbility, a brand-building agency with deep expertise in the Asian market. Nimbility brings a team of specialists who understand the nuances of Chinese consumer behavior, allowing them to tailor their approach to better align with local preferences. The agency will lead a webinar specifically designed for Hungarian wineries, offering insights into the complexities of the Chinese market. This training will provide Hungarian wine producers with practical strategies for entering a competitive space, while also preparing them to navigate potential cultural and logistical challenges.

Pál Rókusfalvy, Hungary's government commissioner for wine marketing, expressed optimism about the collaboration with Nimbility, stating that the Chinese market represents a significant opportunity despite its complexities. Rókusfalvy emphasized that Chinese consumers are showing growing interest in exploring new wine regions and varieties. With their diverse offerings, from the celebrated sweet wines of Tokaj to the mineral-driven reds and whites from volcanic soils, Hungarian wines stand to capture a unique position in China's flourishing wine sector.

The campaign will culminate with a gala event at the Hungarian embassy in Beijing, aimed at further engaging with China's wine trade professionals. The exclusive tasting event will be tailored to distributors and specialized retailers, providing them with a firsthand experience of the range and quality that Hungary has to offer. The gala signifies the importance Hungary places on forging strong, long-term relationships with key players in the Chinese market.

In addition to physical events, the campaign will rely heavily on digital platforms. China's social media landscape plays a pivotal role in shaping consumer preferences, and Hungarian wine producers are investing in building a strong online presence. Platforms like WeChat and RED will serve as vehicles for content, influencer collaborations, and promotions, helping to spread the word among a broad audience. The influence of social media in China's consumer culture makes it a vital part of any successful marketing campaign, particularly when introducing a relatively unfamiliar product like Hungarian wine.

Though Tokaj is undoubtedly the flagship of Hungary's wine regions, the campaign aims to spotlight the country's broader vinous landscape. Nichole Mao, partner and director of sales and marketing in China for Nimbility, has highlighted the richness of Hungary's wine regions. During a recent visit to Hungary for the Hungarian Wine Summit in April 2024, Mao discovered the breadth and quality of wines from areas like Eger, known for its robust reds, and Balaton, with its distinctive mineral whites. Mao stressed that her goal is to bring this diversity to the attention of Chinese consumers, showing that Hungary offers much more than its famous Tokaji dessert wines.

Hungary's focus on diversity is critical in a market like China, where consumers are increasingly interested in exploring new regions and styles. Wines from volcanic soils, such as those found in Eger and Balaton, offer a unique tasting experience that could set Hungarian wines apart from other international offerings. With China's growing interest in premium wines, Hungary's diverse terroir and historic wine traditions provide compelling selling points.

The campaign in China is just one part of a broader strategy to establish a foothold in key Asian markets. Simultaneously, Wines of Hungary is running a parallel initiative in South Korea, another country with a fast-growing and sophisticated wine culture. The South Korean program will include a combination of in-person events, educational activities, and digital marketing campaigns, much like the approach being taken in China. The goal in both markets is to enhance the visibility of Hungarian wines and expand their availability in retail outlets and restaurants.

Rókusfalvy pointed out that South Korea represents a similarly attractive opportunity for Hungarian wines, as its wine market continues to evolve and mature. "Korea has a growing and highly engaged wine enthusiast community," he noted, adding that Hungary's unique wine offerings are well-positioned to appeal to the country's increasingly discerning wine consumers.

As Hungary embarks on this strategic push into China and South Korea, its wine producers are taking significant steps to boost their global profile. The campaign in China, centered around events, digital outreach, and educational initiatives, underscores the country's commitment to elevating the status of Hungarian wines abroad. With the guidance of experts like Nimbility and the support of high-profile figures like Fongyee Walker, Hungary's wines are poised to capture the attention of a new and growing audience of wine lovers in Asia.
