A new study on the American craft beer business found that local brewery clusters helped spread barrel-aging techniques in the late 2000s and early 2010s, but the stronger force was the national rise of the style itself.
The research, published in the Journal of Wine Economics by Steven W. Landgraf of the Virginia Military Institute, examined how U.S. craft brewers adopted barrel-aging from 2008 through 2014. The paper focuses on whether breweries were more likely to release a barrel-aged beer after nearby brewers had already done so, or whether broader national trends mattered more.
Landgraf found evidence for both effects, but the nationwide trend was larger. Nearby breweries that had already released barrel-aged beers raised the chance that another brewery would introduce its first one, suggesting that brewers may have learned from peers or followed local competition. Still, the study says that growth in barrel-aging across the country had a much bigger cumulative impact on adoption.
Barrel-aged beer is a small but influential part of the craft market. The process, which has roots in Belgian brewing, involves aging beer in wooden barrels for weeks, months, or even years. Brewers use the barrels to add wood, spirit, or wine-like flavors. The process is slower and often more expensive than standard production, and the beers are usually sold in smaller batches at higher prices.
The study looked at more than 3,000 U.S. breweries that had not yet released a barrel-aged beer at the start of the sample period. It combined brewery production records from the Brewers Association with release timing estimates based on reviews posted on RateBeer, a beer-rating website that has since shut down. The final data set covered 8,749 brewery-year observations.
Landgraf estimated the probability that a brewery would release its first barrel-aged beer in a given year. He tested whether that probability changed when other breweries within 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 miles had already done so. In each case, the effect of nearby adopters was positive.
The estimated local effect was modest. Under the 5-mile measure, each additional nearby brewery that had already started barrel-aging was associated with about a 1 percentage point increase in the likelihood that another brewery would do the same. At 10 miles, the effect was about 0.7 percentage points. At 20 miles, it was about 0.6 percentage points. At 50 and 100 miles, the effect was about 0.2 percentage points per brewery.
Those figures show that local influence existed, but the paper says the national trend was more powerful because so many breweries across the country were moving in the same direction at once. In 2007, 208 active breweries had already released a barrel-aged beer. By 2013, that number had climbed to 871. The study estimated that each additional barrel-aging brewery anywhere in the United States increased the likelihood that another brewery would adopt the technique by about 0.07 to 0.2 percentage points. Small as that per-brewery effect was, the national total added up quickly as the number of adopters rose.
The geographic spread followed the broader map of American craft brewing. By 2008, barrel-aging was already concentrated in areas with established brewery clusters, including San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Pacific Northwest, Colorado’s Front Range, Austin, the Upper Midwest, and parts of New England. By 2014, those regions had become denser, and places such as Asheville, North Carolina, and Portland, Maine, had become more prominent.
The paper says that pattern is consistent with the way the craft beer industry operates. Many breweries sell heavily into local markets, share information, and interact with nearby peers. That can create what economists call knowledge spillovers, where ideas and techniques spread more easily inside industry clusters. In craft brewing, that might mean sharing equipment tips, production methods, or advice on how to manage the risks of aging beer in wood.
At the same time, the study argues that brewers were not relying only on local contacts. The stronger national effect suggests that information was also moving through trade groups, online communities, industry media, festivals, and the wider reputation of barrel-aged beer as a growing category.
The results held up across several alternative tests. Landgraf reran the model on smaller breweries, on breweries producing less than 15,000 barrels a year, and on samples that excluded the largest brewing regions. He also added a rough local demand measure based on the number of bars in a brewery’s county. Those changes did not materially alter the main finding that nearby adopters mattered, but that the national trend mattered more.
The paper also found several other patterns, though Landgraf treated them more cautiously. Breweries in urban areas were generally more likely to introduce barrel-aged beer, though that relationship was not equally strong in every model. Brewery production size had a negative association with first-time adoption during the period studied, suggesting that smaller breweries were more likely to move into barrel-aging. Counts of nearby breweries in general, not just barrel-aging breweries, were also negatively associated with adoption, a result the author says may reflect the age and structure of larger brewery clusters rather than a simple competition effect.
Landgraf noted an important limitation in the analysis. Some model specifications, especially those using larger geographic radii such as 20 miles and above, showed signs of residual spatial autocorrelation. In plain terms, that means some local patterns may still be influencing the results in ways the model does not fully capture. The paper says that issue could make statistical significance look stronger than it really is in some regressions. The 5-mile and 10-mile models were less affected.
The study also depended on RateBeer review data to estimate when a brewery first released a barrel-aged beer. Landgraf said the site was large enough to serve as a useful proxy, but it still measured first review rather than first commercial release. He added that RateBeer’s closure in 2025 will make similar research harder in the future.
Even with those limits, the study offers one of the clearest quantitative looks at how a brewing technique spread during a key growth period for American craft beer. It suggests that breweries were influenced by what was happening around them, but even more by what they could see happening across the country as barrel-aged beer moved from a niche specialty to an established part of the craft market.
