Montecucco Wine Region Sees Significant Growth with 41% Increase in Grape Production

The Montecucco Doc and Docg wine region is experiencing significant growth. In 2024, the bottled wine volume is set to reach 5,500 hectoliters. This follows a 41% increase in grape production compared to the previous year. The 2024 harvest saw grapes rise from 12,682 quintals in 2023 to 17,924 quintals. Bottled wine also increased by 10%, equating to over 720,000 bottles of 0.75 liters, plus additional formats.

Giovan Battista Basile, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Montecucco, expressed optimism about the future. He noted that the growth reflects the value of the region and the quality-focused, sustainable practices of local producers. The Consorzio will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025, marking a quarter-century of dedication to enhancing this authentic wine-producing area.

The anniversary will be announced at L'Altra Toscana 2025, scheduled for February 20 at Palazzo degli Affari in Florence. This event, now in its fourth edition, will feature 13 Dop and Igp denominations, including Montecucco and Montecucco Sangiovese. The aim is to highlight lesser-known Tuscan wine regions, showcasing their unique history and identity.

In Florence, the Montecucco Consorzio will present 33 labels representing various DO types, such as Montecucco Vermentino Doc, Rosso Doc, Rosso Riserva Doc, Sangiovese Docg, Sangiovese Riserva Docg, and Vin Santo Doc. Basile emphasized the importance of L'Altra Toscana as a platform to share the region's story with journalists and professionals. The event will feature different vintages, chosen for their stylistic characteristics and the wines' longevity.

Montecucco continues to prioritize sustainability. A recent sustainability report shows that over 90% of production is certified organic. This commitment to biodiversity, resource management, and environmental respect is central to Montecucco's identity. In November, the Montecucco Biological District was officially established, becoming the tenth in Tuscany. This move strengthens the region's role as a national leader in sustainability and supports the preservation of local agricultural traditions.
