Wildfires Threaten the World’s Two Largest Vineyard Powers

Smoke, heat and drought are disrupting Spain and France at once, raising risks for the 2026 harvest and global wine supply.

Wildfires sweeping across Spain and France are raising a new alarm for the wine world, not only because vineyards can burn, but because smoke, heat and drought can damage grapes, disrupt harvests and weaken two of the most important wine-producing countries on earth at the same time.

The immediate fire emergency is severe. Spain declared a national wildfire emergency on July 23 under its civil protection system, a step Reuters described as the first of its kind in the country for forest fires. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre said that by July 22, wildfires had burned 254,388 hectares across the European Union in 2026, above the long-term average, though still slightly below the same point in 2025, which the agency identifies as the worst year on record for the bloc.

In Spain, coverage from Reuters, The Associated Press and other outlets has pointed to more than 170,000 hectares burned by July 27. The fire in Ávila has been described as the largest in recent Spanish history. That makes this a historic season in parts of the country, even if it is still too early to say that Spain has already surpassed its 2025 national total of 354,747 hectares burned, which Reuters cited as the highest figure of the past decade.

France may be closer to a record year. Reuters reported on July 27 that Prime Minister François Bayrou called the current wildfire season “unprecedented,” with more land burned than in the record year of 2022. Estimates placed the national total above 116,000 hectares by July 27. In Gironde, flames advanced to within about 15 kilometers of the Bordeaux metropolitan area and forced large evacuations. Authorities have also documented a pyrocumulonimbus event in France, a rare fire-driven storm cloud that can generate lightning and start new blazes, showing how these fires are becoming harder to predict and control.

For Bordeaux itself, the picture remains unsettled rather than catastrophic. Reuters reported that the region’s best-known vineyard areas had not been directly hit “for now,” according to the Bordeaux Wine Council. Even so, growers are facing smoke exposure, poor air quality, transport risks, tourism losses and continued water stress. In many wine regions, those pressures can matter almost as much as flames.

That is why this crisis reaches far beyond southwestern Europe. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, Spain had 919,000 hectares of vineyards in 2025, making it the largest vineyard area in the world. France ranked second with 740,000 hectares. Together they account for about 23.7% of global vineyard area. In production, France made 35.9 million hectoliters of wine in 2025 and Spain produced 29.4 million hectoliters, or roughly 28.8% of world output.

Their role in trade is just as important. France exported €11.2 billion worth of wine in 2025, while Spain exported 19.6 million hectoliters valued at €3 billion. France dominates by value and Spain by volume. When both countries face wildfire risk, extreme heat and drought at once, importers and distributors around the world can feel it through tighter supply, higher prices in premium categories, pressure on bulk wine contracts and uncertainty over blending and bottling plans.

The biggest threat to wine is often not a burned vine but smoke exposure. Research from the Australian Wine Research Institute has shown that smoke can introduce volatile phenols into grapes. These compounds can bind with sugars and remain hard to detect in fruit before being released during fermentation, aging or even while drinking the wine. The result can be smoky, ashy or medicinal flavors that make a wine difficult or impossible to sell.

That risk rises at a critical point in the growing season. The same research shows vines become more sensitive to smoke from veraison through harvest, exactly when many Northern Hemisphere vineyards are moving toward ripening. A vineyard may look intact after a nearby fire but still produce grapes that fail quality standards.

Experience from California has reinforced that concern. A study of wine grape growers there found that wildfire losses often came more from smoke than from direct fire damage. More than 75% of surveyed producers needed laboratory testing because of smoke exposure. For wineries in Spain and France, that means extra sampling costs, trial fermentations, difficult decisions about whether to pick or reject fruit and possible disputes between growers and buyers over quality and contracts.

Direct fire damage also matters. Flames can destroy irrigation systems, trellises, posts, wires and access roads. Heat can injure trunks and vascular tissue inside vines. Technical guidance on post-fire vineyard recovery shows that even when vines survive an event, hidden damage to xylem or phloem can reduce vigor for months or years and may force replanting in some blocks. The economic impact can therefore stretch well beyond one vintage.

Labor is another weak point. Smoke affects workers as well as grapes. Climate-ADAPT and occupational health agencies have warned that outdoor workers face elevated risks from wildfire smoke exposure, especially fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. In vineyards this can mean shorter work windows, slower picking crews, higher protection costs and harvest delays at exactly the moment when timing is crucial for fruit quality.

Heat and drought deepen every one of those problems. Recent viticulture research has shown that rising temperatures and water deficits threaten grape composition, yields and vine development while increasing irrigation needs. The OIV already described France’s 2025 harvest as about 16% below its five-year average and one of its smallest since 1957 if confirmed, largely because of heat and drought. Spain’s crop was projected at about 15% below its five-year average and among its smaller harvests of recent decades. The fires now hitting both countries are landing on vineyards already weakened by repeated climate stress.

The damage does not stop when flames are out. In Mediterranean landscapes, post-fire erosion can become severe during late summer or autumn rains. Climate-ADAPT notes that vineyards can be highly vulnerable depending on slope, ground cover and storm intensity. Burned hillsides may lose topsoil quickly, damaging roads and waterways and raising restoration costs for growers who are already under financial strain.

The longer-term issue may be even more serious: wildfire is becoming part of a broader shift in rural land use that could reshape wine regions themselves. The European Commission has argued that well-managed vineyards can act as functional firebreaks by creating breaks in fuel continuity and improving access for firefighting crews. But that benefit depends on vineyards remaining economically active.

Where vineyards disappear, scrub often returns. Reuters reported last year from Aude in southern France that nearly 5,000 hectares of vineyard removals over a 12-month period had taken away what local growers described as a clean barrier against fire spread. In places where managed vines remained, firefighters said blazes were more likely to slow down. Where uprooted parcels had been left idle, brush had recolonized them and helped flames move faster.

That matters because Europe’s vineyard map is already shrinking in some places. The OIV said EU vineyard area fell by 1.6% in 2025, driven largely by removals in France and to a lesser extent Spain. France lost 4.4% of its vineyard area in one year and Spain lost 1.3%. If repeated fires are added to lower yields, higher insurance costs and uncertainty over smoke taint, some marginal areas may become harder to keep in production.

Researchers studying Mediterranean land abandonment have found that abandoned farmland increases wildfire risk by adding fuel load and continuity across landscapes. The European Commission has linked rising fire danger not only to hotter temperatures and longer droughts but also to rural abandonment itself. That creates a cycle with direct consequences for wine: fewer active farms can mean more fire-prone land; more fires can then push more growers out.

For wine producers, this changes what adaptation means. It is no longer enough to ask whether a grape variety ripens earlier or whether irrigation is available. Growers also need to know whether their landscape is still managed enough to slow fires, whether labor will be available during smoky heat waves and whether margins are strong enough to pay for prevention work such as vegetation management, safety buffers, smoke testing and soil restoration.

The broader climate outlook suggests these pressures will intensify rather than fade. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has identified the Mediterranean as a climate hot spot where drought severity and wildfire risk are expected to rise with warming. The European Environment Agency has warned that Europe is warming faster than any other continent and that extreme heat, droughts, fires and floods will worsen even under relatively optimistic scenarios.

Wildfires also feed back into climate change itself through emissions and ecosystem damage. The Joint Research Centre estimated cumulative wildfire emissions in the EU at 8.31 million tons of CO2 from the start of 2026 through July 22. Copernicus has noted that extreme fires can release more carbon than regrowing vegetation later absorbs while also reducing soil carbon storage capacity.

For global wine markets, two consequences stand out. One is geographic change: scientific studies suggest viticultural suitability is likely to decline across warmer Mediterranean zones while improving in some cooler northern areas under future warming scenarios. That does not simply mean less wine from southern Europe; it may also mean different wines with altered harvest dates, changed flavor profiles and new production limits tied to water scarcity and fire risk.

The second consequence is social and public health related. Smoke from major fires can travel hundreds or even thousands of miles and affect respiratory and cardiovascular health far from where flames burn. For wine regions that depend on seasonal outdoor labor and tourism income, poor air quality can reduce working days and visitor traffic while increasing operating costs.

Spain and France remain central pillars of world wine, but this summer’s fires show how exposed those pillars have become. What happens now will not only shape the 2026 harvest but also test whether Europe’s leading vineyard landscapes can stay productive under repeated shocks from heat, drought, smoke and rural retreat. For producers from Bordeaux to Castilla-La Mancha, the challenge is no longer just how to grow grapes in a warmer climate; it is how to keep entire agricultural landscapes viable enough to resist fire at all.
