Golf Course Sinkhole Reveals Hidden 19th-Century Wine Cellar Near Manchester

A routine inspection at Davyhulme Park Golf Club, located southwest of Manchester, led to an unexpected discovery after a section of the green near the 13th hole collapsed. What initially appeared to be a drainage issue revealed a hidden 19th-century wine cellar beneath the course. The incident occurred when Steve Hopkins, the club’s head groundskeeper, responded to reports of a small sinkhole. Upon further investigation and digging, his team uncovered a brick-vaulted chamber sealed off for decades.

Inside the chamber, dozens—possibly up to one hundred—dust-covered bottles of wine and port were found scattered across the floor. Many bottles remained intact, their glass darkened by age and coated in thick dust. Early assessments suggest the cellar had been undisturbed for approximately 120 years. Hopkins noted that the bottles appeared hand-blown and unusually shaped, indicating their considerable age.

The cellar is believed to be a remnant of Davyhulme Hall, a manor house that once stood on the property before its demolition in 1888. The golf course itself was established in 1911 on what had been the manor’s grounds. Martyn Hamer, a professional at the club, described the find as exciting for both staff and members, highlighting the site’s rich local history.

Interest in the discovery quickly spread beyond the club. A video posted on Instagram by Davyhulme Park Golf Club showing the cellar and its contents attracted more than 40,000 views within a single day. Hamer remarked that such engagement was unprecedented for their social media accounts.

In an ironic twist, the 13th hole where the collapse occurred has long been known as “The Cellars,” a name that now seems prescient given the find. Local lore had hinted at underground structures from the estate’s past, but no one expected to uncover such a well-preserved piece of history beneath the fairway.

For now, club officials have secured the area and resealed the cellar to ensure safety. There are plans to display some of the recovered bottles in the clubhouse as a tribute to both the estate’s heritage and this unusual chapter in its story. The discovery has sparked renewed interest in Davyhulme Park Golf Club’s history among members and visitors alike.
