In Memoriam: Pau Roca, a pillar of the international wine sector

The world of wine mourns the loss of a significant figure, Pau Roca, the Director General of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), who passed away at the age of 65 in Dijon, France. His demise on December 7th, after a prolonged illness, marks the end of an era in the global wine industry. Roca, a native of Reus, Tarragona, Spain, was a prominent figure in the wine sector, known for his extensive knowledge and influential leadership.

Roca's journey with the OIV began in 1992 when he joined as a Spanish delegate. His profound understanding and passion for the wine industry were evident as he took the helm of the OIV in 2018, following his election at the General Assembly in Uruguay. His tenure was not just a period of leadership but also a time of significant transformation and progress within the organization.

Apart from his role in the OIV, Roca was actively involved in other significant areas. He presided over the think tank "Consumer Law and Information" (DROCON) from 2010 to 2016 and was the vice president of the "Sustainable Development and Climate Change" think tank between 2016 and 2018. These roles highlighted his versatile expertise and commitment to broader issues impacting the industry and society at large.

Roca's background in the olive oil sector and scientific research in oceanography provided him with a unique perspective, enriching his contributions to the wine industry. He led the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) for over two decades, bringing a wealth of experience to the OIV. His tenure at the OIV was marked by significant initiatives, including the drive for digitalization in the wine sector and the relocation of the OIV headquarters to Dijon. Under his guidance, the OIV expanded to include three new members – the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Albania – bringing the total number of member states to fifty.

Roca's global vision was evident in his efforts to strengthen ties with major global institutions like the World Trade Organization, World Tourism Organization, OECD, FAO, CIHEAM, and Codex Alimentarius. His leadership was instrumental in ensuring that the OIV's role and activities gained recognition in a globalized world.

The loss of Pau Roca has resonated deeply within the OIV and the broader wine community. His conviction and commitment have been praised by prominent figures such as Regina Vanderlinde and Luigi Moio, who chaired the OIV during his tenure. The organization, along with its member states and scientific community, extends its heartfelt condolences to Roca's family, including his wife, Diana Ribera, and their three children.

In his passing, the global wine industry loses a visionary leader whose contributions have shaped the sector profoundly. Pau Roca's legacy will continue to influence the world of wine, echoing his passion and dedication.

The OIV has opened a channel for condolences at secretariat@oiv.int, inviting those who wish to share their sympathies with Roca's family.
