The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau said Wednesday that it is currently taking a median of 7 days to process formula applications for distilled spirits, malt beverages and wine that do not require sample analysis, while formulas that do require laboratory review are taking 15 days.

The agency’s latest processing chart, updated at 7 a.m. on April 15, shows that it is now working on new distilled spirits, malt beverage and wine formula applications received on April 7. For formulas that require sample analysis, the bureau said it is processing applications received on April 1.

The figures matter for wineries, breweries, distillers and importers that need federal formula approval before bottling or bringing products into the United States. The timing can affect launch schedules, inventory planning and the sequence of other filings, including label approvals.

TTB said it has received 7,605 beverage alcohol formula applications so far in 2026. The agency said its customer service goal is to complete review of 85% of formula applications within 15 days, with an additional 15 days allowed for formulas that require sample analysis.

The bureau said formula processing times are measured in calendar days from the time an application is received until it is approved or rejected. It also said the clock includes time spent in the queue, sample testing when needed and back-and-forth corrections on electronic submissions.

Applications filed through Formulas Online can be checked in the applicant’s account, which TTB said is available around the clock. The agency also noted that applications submitted on or after the date listed in its chart have been received but not yet assigned to a specialist.

TTB said applications are reviewed in the order they are received, although resubmitted applications that need correction take priority over new filings. The agency also said there is no fee to apply through its online system.
