The Adega de Monção, a well-known cooperative winery in northern Portugal, has introduced a new wine to its portfolio: the Alvarinho Deu-La-Deu Sweet. This release marks a shift for the producer, offering a sweeter and more aromatic interpretation of the Alvarinho grape, which is traditionally known for its dry and crisp profile. The wine is produced in the Monção and Melgaço sub-region, an area recognized for its unique terroir and long-standing tradition with the Alvarinho variety.
The launch comes at a time when consumer preferences are evolving. There is growing demand for lighter, more aromatic wines that can be enjoyed in relaxed settings and appeal to a broader audience. The Deu-La-Deu Sweet aims to meet this trend by presenting a wine that stands out within the Alvarinho category. According to Armando Fontainhas, president of Adega de Monção, the new wine is designed to attract younger consumers with its pronounced aromatic character and lower alcohol content. The wine has an alcohol level of 9.5%, which is lower than many traditional Alvarinhos.
The name Deu-La-Deu Sweet pays homage to Deu-la-Deu Martins, a historical figure from Monção known for her resourcefulness and resilience. The winery draws on this legacy to offer a modern take on Alvarinho that remains true to the region’s identity while expanding its appeal. The wine features prominent fruity and floral notes, balanced by a lively acidity that provides freshness and persistence on the palate. Its versatility makes it suitable as an aperitif, with desserts, or in creative pairings.
Produced from carefully selected grapes grown in Monção and Melgaço, the Deu-La-Deu Sweet reinforces Adega de Monção’s reputation as a leading producer of Alvarinho wines. The cooperative represents hundreds of local growers and has played a significant role in promoting both the grape variety and the region itself.
The new wine is now available through Adega de Monção’s online store and at selected retailers across Portugal. It is sold in 75cl bottles at a recommended price of €9.49. The suggested serving temperature is 8°C, which highlights its fresh and aromatic qualities.
Founded on a cooperative model, Adega de Monção has built its reputation on quality, tradition, and innovation. With this latest release, the winery continues to showcase the potential of Alvarinho while supporting local producers and highlighting the distinctiveness of the Monção and Melgaço region.
